McCain Defends Campaign Team Against Palin

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Republican Senator John McCain on Wednesday strongly defended the top advisers from his 2008 presidential campaign in the face of sharp criticism from his vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin.

McCain, in a telephone interview with Reuters, singled out campaign manager Steve Schmidt and senior adviser Nicolle Wallace for praise after Palin blasted the pair in her memoir, "Going Rogue: An American Life."

"There's been a lot of dust flying around in the last few days and I just wanted to mention that I have the highest regard for Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace and the rest of the team ... and I appreciated all the hard work and everything they did to help the campaign," he said."I think it's just time to move on," he said.

"But you know, I'm proud of Nicolle and Steve and (senior campaign official) Rick Davis and (senior adviser) Mark Salter and I'll always have great affection for them," he said.

(Of Palin) "I'm still really proud of her and the campaign she ran and I think it's pretty obvious that she has a substantial base and interest out there," McCain said.

10. The worse thing is ...

is that if McCain had NOT picked Palin then she wouldn't have given that hateful speech regarding Obama at the Republican Convention and she wouldn't have given all the rallies where the HATE SPEECH started growing out of bounds, etc. And we might have been able to be living in a more peaceful USA with Obama having a much better chance at uniting our country!

11. It is hard to forgive McCain for even picking her.

While he is just slightly better than your average Republican in Congress, his choice of Palin is truly unforgivable. To think that Palin would have any better chance to be president than my dog is terrifying.

Not that I was going to vote for him, mind you. But I still had a little respect for the old bastard. That all changed when he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Even in defending his aides he still heaps praise on Palin and her future for the party.

I'd have some respect for these people if they just came out and said something like "in an effort to shake up the race we took a chance on someone who on the initial face of things looked like she would be a good compliment to the team. As time went on we realized our lack of proper vetting failed to reveal certain elements that would have shown Palin to be a poor choice as a VP candidate and we apologize."

I could care less if they really mean it but just saying it would probably effective end Palin's consideration as anything other than a 3rd party candidate in the future.
