Majority in US see Afghan war not worth cost: poll

(AFP) – 4 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Support for the US mission in Afghanistan has slipped to a new low, with 44 percent of Americans now saying the war there has been worth the cost, according to a recently released poll.

Amid mounting divisiveness over what was once one of President Barack Obama's top foreign policy issues, the poll by The Washington Post and ABC News also showed ratings for how he has handled the mission there eroding, to 45 percent approving of how he is dealing with Afghanistan and 47 disapproving, compared to 63 percent approval last year.

The numbers come as Obama grapples with whether to send more US troops to Afghanistan to boost the fight against a growing Taliban-led insurgency, just a week after a stopover at a US military base in Alaska at the start of his Asia trip when he told US troops he will get "public support back home" for the mission.

Only 44 percent now say the war in Afghanistan has been worth fighting -- the fewest since early 2007 -- and 52 percent say it has not, up 13 points from its low of last December, the news outlets' polling divisions said.

And by God, they will get all the Billions and AT LEAST 30,000 more troops to be used as cannon fodder.

The War Machine will be fed, or else! :puke:

2. That's a big first step;)

Lets make a deal with Pakistan, a good one for them, and let them clean out all the Taliban and make the border very difficult. After that, cleaning up Afghanistan would be a lot easier and quicker.

Here are two comments by Ambassator Karl Eikenberry (also General Eikenberry with 36 months experience in Afghanistan):
Eikenberry was interviewed on NPR just two days after he testified before Congress in 2007. He said, "The Taliban military forces remain a much weaker enemy. Whenever the Taliban masses on the battlefield, those Taliban forces are defeated, always in very short order." NPR Feb. 13, 2007.

"Pakistan’s military and security forces have taken significant casualties against the same enemy that we in Afghanistan face" Feb. 17, 2007, Congress, Feb. 17, 2007 http://tinyurl.com/yhvql5f

The Taliban are routinely defeated in Afghanistan and the Pakistani Army is now defeating them in Pakistan on the border. Time to stop complaining and recognize it doesn't take forever to leave given these circumstances.

I watch the Pakistani press and their bloggers. They're pissed off at the terrorism and want
the government to crack down. They have a very real domestic terror threat from the Taliban
and al Qaeda, so let's one of the world's largest democracies. They're doing the job.

"Recent attacks on the military headquarters prove that these people have no fear of dying and are heavily armed and well funded even supported. Such acts of atrocities have left the country gripped in fear. The government should be firm and quick in its action to curb these elements and eliminate the threat once and for all. One would assume that the death of hundreds of people in a matter of weeks would give the ruling government a wake up call, there are people who believe that the government is in collusion with these elements and is profiting off them."
