Gitmo 9/11 suspects to NY for trial
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Self-proclaimed Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other Guantanamo Bay detainees will be sent to New York to face trial in a civilian federal court, an Obama administration official said Friday.

The official said Attorney General Eric Holder plans to announce the decision later in the morning.

The official is not authorized to discuss the decision before the announcement, so spoke on condition of anonymity.

Bringing such notorious suspects to U.S. soil to face trial is a key step in President Barack Obama's plan to close the terror suspect detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Obama initially planned to close the detention center by Jan. 22, but the administration is no longer expected to meet that deadline.

The New York case may also force the court system to confront a host of difficult legal issues surrounding counter-terrorism programs begun after the 2001 attacks, including the harsh interrogation techniques once used on some of the suspects while in CIA custody. The most severe method — waterboarding, or simulated drowning — was used on Mohammed 183 times in 2003, before the practice was banned.

3. So, after almost 9 years they finally bring him to trial?
Edited on Fri Nov-13-09 06:37 AM by Selatius
Fucking Timothy McVeigh went through the system lightning fast in comparison with less of a hitch. If it ever comes out that we basically just tortured the guy and threatened to slaughter his family to get confessions out of him, we are going to be in a shit storm of trouble getting the trial over quickly.

5. I suppose the meme will start that the Obama admin. is soft on terror with full force now
How dare they bring KSM to NYC???? They will say that we cant have a terrorist brought to the US to stand trial. I guess those people have no faith in our judicial system and would rather they be tried in the shadows much in the same way they were tortured during the Bush admin. Bravo to President Obama for doing this and having faith in our judicial system.

6. But what if Khalid Sheikh Mohammed uses his...
Super terrorist powers and escapes, destroys New York and then takes over this country and makes all the Christians convert to Islam?

:sarcasm:

The way the cry baby Republicans sound this is real possibility! The GOP are so brave when it comes to sending our troops into war for profit and oil but are all of a sudden to scared to have couple hundred bad guys put on trial and houses in our Super Max System. If it was the Democratic Party trying to block a Republican President from doing the same thing it would be that Liberals are wimps and scared of their own shadows!

God damn, those idiots act like these "Terrorists" have nightmarish super powers -- all the more evidence that the whole thing is based in The Power of Nightmares.

11. All the Republicans have is FEAR FEAR FEAR...
...And RELIGION! It is easy to pass on FEAR to those who are weak minded and do not think for themselves. The Republicans, the wealthy, have mastered the art of using religious folks as "vote-bots" to get them to vote against their own economic well being...These people can be talked into almost anything as long as whoever is doing the talking is anti-gay/abortion/evolution. This is the job FOX & Talk Radio were created to do!

If this was not such a huge threat to what America is suppose to be I might feel sorry for these weak minded TEA BAGGIN Christians. SAD!

8. Process trumps truth
In the U.S. system of justice, in which I have great faith, process trumps truth. The process is intended to yield truth, and it usually does, but in the case of a conflict between the two, process wins. There are numerous examples of a person going free when there is no doubt whatsoever about their guilt.

I like the idea of KSM and the others spending the rest of their lives in an American prison. I do not like the idea of them being set free because their lawyers were extremely good.

12. Since we freely TORTURED them, the death penalty should be off of the table.
We don't want to make them Martyrs, just encourage true justice.
