El Salvador facing food shortage

About 10,000 people in El Salvador are in need of food aid after devastating floods washed away crops.

Three days of national mourning are being held following the deaths of at least 140 people in the floods.

Thousands are living in shelters as a result of the disaster and large parts of the country are without electricity and clean water.

The areas around the capital, San Salvador, and the central province of San Vicente were hit hardest.

4. Spain and Japan the first to send aid




Japan first to help El Salvador

International Red Cross, Red Crescent, OAS and Pan American Health Organization also have sent aid. Venezuela expected to join in aid efforts soon.

Japan sent water filtration equipment, water containers, tents and blankets. The Japanese aid was flown from Miami where that country has a warehouse for emergency aid.

Death toll is now up to 157 with 58 disappeared, 14,000 are homeless, 1,800 homes destroyed, according to El Salvador media.
