Ex-NY Post editor sues paper, claims racism, sexism
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 05:04 PM by cal04
Source: Reuters

A former New York Post editor has sued the newspaper and its parent, News Corp, saying she was fired after complaining about sexism and racism, including a cartoon that appeared to liken U.S. President Barack Obama to a chimpanzee.

The lawsuit, filed on Monday in Manhattan federal court, said that Sandra Guzman, a black and Puerto Rican associate editor, was fired on September 29 in retaliation for complaints about pervasive racism and sexism at the newspaper.

The lawsuit said Guzman, the "only female editor of color at the Post," was among those who complained about a February 18 cartoon that depicted a policeman shooting a crazed chimpanzee, a play on an actual incident in Connecticut.

The caption read: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill." This led many people to view the chimpanzee as a depiction of Obama, who a day earlier had signed into law a $787 billion economic stimulus package.

8. Tech workers train their H-1b replacements every day of the year before they're fired
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 04:21 PM by mule_train
so maybe that's made me a little cynical, I cant even inagine having a recourse for being fired for ANY reason, I guess I've never lived in that social class where a termination could be legally be called 'unjust'

in my world, there's no such thing

14. No, they get fired because they're not cheap labor.
An Indian-American tech person would be fired in your scenario, too.

18. Not in the way that you think.
They're hiring foreign Indians for cheap labor, not because of their ethnicity. Similarly, they're displacing Americans (of all stripes) because they are not cheap labor.

It's not the American citizenship they have a problem with per se, it's the wage laws covered under said citizenship.

21. 'It's not the American citizenship ' --> yes, it is

23. You're misunderstanding discrimination based on national origin:
http://www.justice.gov/crt/legalinfo/natorigin.php#emp

Federal laws prohibit discrimination based on a person's national origin, race, color, religion, disability, sex, and familial status. Laws prohibiting national origin discrimination make it illegal to discriminate because of a person's birthplace, ancestry, culture or language. This means people cannot be denied equal opportunity because they or their family are from another country, because they have a name or accent associated with a national origin group, because they participate in certain customs associated with a national origin group, or because they are married to or associate with people of a certain national origin.

The example you gave illustrates a cheap-labor profit motive, not discrimination against Americans based on their national origin, according to the Justice Department.

24. no, YOU dont understand that it's more than just cheap labor, it's INDENTURED labor
to the specific employer someone with citizenship or green card can QUIT, and H-1b CANT without risk of deportation

you dont work in tech, do you

27. Yes, I understand how the system works.
But upthread, you said "not being Indian" was reason enough for Americans to get fired, as if skin color (and not cheap/indentured labor) was enough to fire Americans.

H-1Bs are not limited to only Indians, so when Americans are replaced by non-Indian H-1Bs, simply "not being Indian" is not the key to being let go from the company.

11. how much money would you need to be black?
20/20 did a race town hall a few years ago. at the beginning of the meeting, white people said black people had certain advantages in this society, sort of like your post. but when the moderator asked them how much money they would need to be black in america, every single one said they'd have to have millions of dollars. and why? why because black people are discriminated against
this dissonance and disconnect, is simply amazing.

white people still have an advantage in american society. i doubt if any of them actually want to be white, but perhaps they'd like a little white privilege.
