(CNN) - White House Communications Director Anita Dunn will step down from her post early next month, two White House officials confirm to CNN.

Dan Pfeiffer, the current deputy communications director, will takeover the top job, the officials also said.

Dunn, a seasoned political operative, assumed the role earlier this year when then-Communications Director Ellen Moran left the post for a role at the Commerce Department. Dunn made clear she planned to hold the position only temporarily.
