Footage shows insurgents with U.S. ammo
Source: Globe and Mail

Television footage broadcast today showed insurgents handling what appears to be U.S. ammunition in a remote area of eastern Afghanistan that American forces left last month following a deadly firefight that killed eight troops.

The U.S. military said the forces that left the area claim they removed and accounted for their equipment.

Al-Jazeera broadcast video showing insurgents handling weapons, including anti-personnel mines with U.S. markings on them. The television station reported that insurgents said they seized the weapons from two U.S. remote outposts in Nuristan province. It was unclear when the video was filmed.

The ammunition could be used against U.S. and Afghan forces, although the amount shown was not extensive. However, the footage will no doubt be used by insurgent propagandists to promote their “victory” over the Americans and encourage their supporters.

You don't suppose that Karzai's family and friends are selling U.S. ordnance to the Taliban?

If so, what a shocker!

Clearly, what the situation now calls for is sending in more U.S. troops and more U.S. ammo. For sure.

3. Karzai has never had to.
The US armed, trained and supported the Taliban, and has for years and years. That's the trouble with the secret government.

8. "You don't suppose that Karzai's family and friends are selling U.S. ordnance to the Taliban? "
I seriously doubt that Karzai, his family or friends are selling ANYTHING to the Taliban. It's my understanding that Karzai's father was killed by the Taliban - years ago.

10. Reminds me of Operation 'Phoenix' in Vietnam
Where the grenades and munitions given to the ARVN troops were marked or serial numbers recorded. The result was that they found U.S. ammunition and explosives from this source were being used by the Viet Cong.

This is a serious problem, and if it comes from two faced players who are Afghanis it denotes a serious flaw as to how well military ops are working there.

12. Sell to both sides
and you always win.

It is common for arms dealers to sell guns and ammo to anyone with money. Wouldn't surprise me if K&R sold as much as the market would purchase.

16. They are going to be showing up in Iraq too...
We just gave the Iraqi Gov. a boat load of M-16s and the ammo to use.

Corruption and greed will ensure a nice distribution to the foes. Probably not preventable. But certainly was anticipated. They probably made an "Acceptable Loss Rate" model and went from there.

As to Afghanistan, the place was flooded with equipment during the cold war. It is dry and cool. Guns in cosmo or lubricant will last forever. Ammo also lasts near forever if kept in the cans (I shoot some 60+ year old ammo and a lot of 25+ year old stuff). Certainly enough for timely propaganda.

Then again a supply crew could have needed some money.
