Police: DNA, ballistics link Monfort to officer's killing

SEATTLE -- Police officials on Monday said DNA evidence collected from the scene of Officer Tim Brenton's murder and the firebombing of several police vehicles a week earlier are a match to Christopher Monfort. Monfort was shot Friday afternoon in a confrontation with Seattle police detectives at a Tukwila apartment complex. At a news conference, Seattle Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said a .223-caliber rifle found in Monfort's apartment is an identical ballistic match to the weapon used to kill Brenton and wound his partner, Britt Sweeney, on Halloween night. Officials released photos of the rifle, as well as pictures of bombs and bomb-making materials recovered from the apartment. The Oct. 22 torching of a mobile command vehicle and two patrol cars did not injure anyone, but Pugel said investigators believe Monfort intended to kill with that attack.

The explosion that destroyed the large command vehicle was intended to lure officers to the scene, Pugel said, and a later detonation of explosive devices attached to two parked patrol cars was likely designed to kill first responders. The gun police say was used in the murder

The fliers left at the scene of the torched police cruisers mentioned the case of former King County Sheriff's deputy Paul Schene, who was accused of beating a 15-year-old girl inside a holding cell. Schene has since been fired from the department.

The criminal trial of Schene was scheduled to begin this week, but prosecutors announced Monday that the trial had been postponed until January.

This guy is seriously bad news, yet has essentially no record. VERY unusual. Setting bombs with traps for first responders, assassinating an officer just sitting in his car, and backing up to avoid getting on the car video. etc. scary dude.

like he used excessive force. some are obvious. i am just making this point, because several (liars) have accused me of always taking the cops' side. that's absurd. schene was clearly out of line. i'm glad he was fired.

i've pretty extensively studied cop killers.

this guy is an outlier, to say the least.

i cannot recall the last cop killer that had essentially no record whatsoever.

and so many things going for him.

it's just weird.

this guy had a plan or help. How does one suddenly become a terrorist? Something or someone is lurking in his past connections.

The guy's a nutcase- but not every nutcase is some sort of terrorist. From what we know, he has no following- and no leader. No one else is waiting on the wings or in some cell. It's not Jihad- just a crazy person who's now off the streets.

He had a clear political agenda, adhered to by many others, and a plan to change our political structure by the use of violence. The monster we're discussing just wanted to kill cops. He's merely a mass-murderer obsessed with a specific target-of-choice.
