Kristallnacht remembered in Berlin

Monday 09 November 2009

As German Chancellor Angela Merkel, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachov and ex-Polish president Lech Walesa celebrated the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, more subdued tributes were held to mark the 71st anniversary of the nazis' Kristallnacht pogrom.

On Kristallnacht - the Night of Broken Glass - at least 99 German Jews were killed, 267 synagogues destroyed and thousands of Jewish businesses vandalised and looted.

Up to 30,000 German Jews were arrested and placed in concentration camps.

The pogrom marked an intensification of the nazis' fascist policies that would eventually lead to the murder of some six million Jews.

In Berlin a special service was held at a memorial outside the Jewish Community of Berlin's building.

The event also paid tribute to Anne Frank, who would have turned 80 this year had she not died of typhus in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp.

4. That implies that Kristallnacht was revenge for something the Jews did
What would that be?

11. Okay, I understand now
The US used 9/11 in the same way the Nazis used the Reichstag fire. I agree with that.

9. No, it was your "Reichstag Fire"
It similarly legitimized the loss of civil rights that followed.

2. The Nazis paid top dollar to the West, pennies to the east for war crimes.
57,000,000 killed in the East is hardly worth pennies a person.

Therein lies the bankruptcy of Western elitist thinking. How was the East supposed to get back on its feet after the Nazis ravaged and murdered them?

The USA officially "lost" the Soviet request for Aid, but was quick to kiss up to the WWII enemies, Japan and Germany. The Germans paid billions to the west.

So Stalin had to do several things: Get a stranglehold on as much Germany as possible and work them like ants for decades, steal their labor and rebuild the USSR.

6. Germany has many tragedies to commemorate.
Too bad it is forgetting the lessons of its own downfall.

10. I think it's ancient history to most living Americans
Kristallnacht is hand-waved, just something Boosh did in another lifetime, not a lesson for us certainly. Then there's lectures about "anti-semetic progroms"... as an aside to Mr. Fascist upthread, the historical analogy you were reaching for was "9/11=Burning of the Reichstag", even though historical doubt remains whether either event was staged or merely exploited to the fullest.

12. What it means...
Is that Germany officially commemorates and regrets its past crimes, but does nothing to fight for justice in today's world, and indeed participates in or supports much of the oppression occurring right now. That is not a good way to make amends for criminality.
