Fort Hood shooting suspect conscious, talking, hospital says
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the suspect in last week's Fort Hood mass shooting, is conscious and talking, a spokesman for the Army hospital where he is being treated told CNN on Monday.

The development comes a day after Army investigators asked troops and civilians for help gathering clues about Thursday's shooting, saying some who fled the gunfire might have evidence.

"The Fort Hood office of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command is seeking any military or civilian personnel who may have left the scene ... with gunshot damage such as damaged privately owned vehicles, personnel clothing, etc.," investigators said in a written statement. "CID is also seeking any military or civilian personnel who may have inadvertently left the scene of this incident with material that could be used as firearms residue related evidence such as shell casings inside the boot, etc."

The statement said such objects would help Army investigators and the FBI "in their bullet trajectory analysis of the scene, to insure the comprehensiveness of the ongoing investigation."

I hope there is an opportunity to learn the truth about why this guy did what he did.

1. I wonder if they will water board him?
I feel sad that this is the first thing to come to mind. I hope that they record these interviews because I would love to believe the interrogation results.

5. Sweet!
It would be more convincing if they hadn't said that he was dead first. On that same note they did say that the first responder was killed. I hope our young first responder is not another Jessica (can't think of her last name now)created to distract us. Well we can hope for the best, that the doctor is alive and can help us understand what went wrong and where we can make changes. Then , of course, it will be off to the gallows for him.

4. Maybe his statements will settle the terrorism/not terrorism question
Maybe they won't. No matter what, there will always be people who insist that it was (or was not) a terrorist attack.

7. just curious...
what elements are required of an act of violence that is perpetrated against another individual or group in order for the act to be considered terrorism? I would like your opinion on this.

9. I think foreign influence is the required ingredient.
Must receive assistance from a recognized terrorist organization, whether financial or just strategic.. Would be my guess anyway. Almost all criminal acts of agression are terrorist to one degree or another but we don't launch the military against them.

12. In reality he was not.. He was a criminal of horrific proportions
I do not believe his goal was to terrify the people living in Oklahoma city but to "Punish" the government. IMO the 19 terrorists that hijacked the planes on 9-11 were no more than mere criminals either..I believe virtually all acts of terror are of a criminal nature and not "Acts of war" as our government wants us to believe.

10. I define it as use of violence as a means of political coercion
If Hasan's goal was to intimidate US soldiers into not fighting in the Middle East or to intimidate President Obama into bringing all US troops home from the Middle East, that would make it terrorism.

If he was just a nutball who decided to commit suicide and take as many people as possible down with him, that was not terrorism.

28. Political motive for the violence, at least, but should probably include some other ingredient(s),
such as: innocent targets and/or the hope of swaying opinion by frightening people

6. I think...
With the way our military is becoming more radicalized by the Christians this guy was probably harassed for being Muslim...I remember some Muslim soldiers talking about being preached to or being called "Camel Jockeys". I truly hate religions! If only a day would come when folks just kept their supernatural beliefs to themselves we would be much better off!

Maybe I am wrong but I bet this played a role in his snapping the way he did. I am in NO WAY excusing his cowardly act but this is a possibility that must be looked into!

15. I'm happy he's alive.
I'm happy he's alive and I'm also happy he's paralyzed. No, I don't think of myself as a demon, but I can't think of any more appropriate punishment for a murderous bastard like this than a long long long lifetime of total paralysis.

19. I can't help but see the grim irony of this.
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 12:02 PM by Akoto
He either killed or wounded a large number of people on a military base. We presumably saved his life, only to probably sentence him to death for his crimes anyhow. I don't know why this occurs to me, as I feel no real sympathy for the man, but still.

At least we might hear his reasons, rather than the many hypotheses of the MSM, I guess.

21. I think that will be the case
since he was scheduled for deployment. Any other time and place, this might have just been life in Leavenworth, but he had active orders to deploy, so this will be treated differently..

It makes no sense to me to save in hospitals and then sentence to death.
