Bush appointee in question
Choice for manufacturing spot opened China factory

by Mike Allen and Jonathan Weisman
Washington Post

Six months after promising to create an office to help the nation's struggling manufacturers, President Bush settled on someone to head it, but the nomination was being reconsidered last night after Democrats revealed that his candidate had opened a factory in China.

Several officials said the nomination may be scrapped because of the political risk but said that had not been decided. Bush's opponent, Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), has made job losses his chief point of attack, and some administration officials feared the nomination could hand him fresh ammunition.

1. A manufacturing czar?
What is THAT? Is this just some kind of symbolic job title to make people feel good and make it seem like this Administration is doing something?

2. You got it...it's all they can do, take symbolic action. They got nothin'
to stand on; nothin' to run on; and even if they wanted to 'help' American manufacturing create more jobs (which they don't) it would take more than one person on the federal payroll to do the task...and that would mean more and bigger government, which is something the Shrubbites are supposed to be against, but really aren't, and don't you feel as though you have fallen down the rabbit hole some days???

3. Why doesn't * appoint a McDonalds franchisee owner czar?
I mean since McD's has created so many manufacturing jobs it would only make sense to go with someone who has vast experience in the area!!!!

8. yep - rich isn't it
take six months to act on a symbolic promise on labor day. Then chose someone NOT with experience of domestic job creation during this tight market...but of job exportation.

14. I guess this guy has been talking to Meanspin
and those jobs will be picking up!

But Kerry's campaign, tipped off about the impending nomination several hours earlier, hastened to distribute news reports that Raimondo's firm, Behlen Manufacturing Co. of Columbus, Neb., had laid off 75 U.S. workers in 2002, four months after announcing plans for a $3 million factory in northwest Beijing.

Bush aides said Behlen, founded in 1936, has four U.S. plants employing 1,000 people and a 150,000-square- foot plant in China employing 180.

and moving to China soon -

we need signs that say:

Coming soon - to a neighborhood far away - American Jobs in China

Just like the old movie posters - that it should state that this will be a very long running feature brought to us by the Bush Administration.

15. It's not just that they employ PR instead of taking action . . .
It's that their PR sucks as well. I think ChimpCo just handed Kerry another big long belt for the Browning.

18. This is part of a consistent, brazen pattern.
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 01:53 PM by benfranklin1776
Recall that he appointed people to governmental regulatory agencies who were handsomely paid lobbyists for corporations and industries battling to thwart envrionmental and safety regulations. http://www.commondreams.org/headlines01/0512-01.htm
His simple "strategery" is obviously to appoint people to policy making positions who have participated in the creation of problems to governmental posts where they can thwart any meaningful solution to them. Thus the continuum of erosion of worker and environmental protection can be efficiently maintained. It is akin to allowing the foxes to have control over henhouse security and charging them with formulating and implementing ways to "improve" it.
