iPhone For Verizon In 2010

By Dan Frommer
On 9:45 am EST, Saturday November 7, 2009

Apple will release a new iPhone next summer that works on Verizon Wireless as well as all global networks, a report claims, citing sources in the Taiwan supply chain.

The report, via AppleInsider, also says that the new iPhone will be smaller than the current iPhone, including a smaller screen. And that it will be manufactured for Apple by a different supplier, a subsidiary of netbook-maker Asustek.

Assuming Apple does not renew its exclusive U.S. deal with AT&T, it makes sense that Apple would make an iPhone that could work on Verizon, the largest U.S. wireless carrier with 89 million subscribers.  (Verizon uses a different technology than AT&T--CDMA--so Apple has to build a new kind of phone to work on the network.

6. Not as much as Windows Mobile is. Carriers are expected to drop it like a hot potato...
...and replace it with Droid.

Balmer loses again.

On the iPhone vs. Droid front, Apple and AT&T are about to come out with a $99 Full Featured 3GS for the holiday season.

Many people don't like the carrier for one reason or another, but I stick with them in part because of the union factor. To each their own.

39. Well, I haven't actually ever had a problem with them yet.
I drive truck all over the Northeast and have experienced excellent coverage. I would imagine having problems with any corporate entity, especially if it involved trying to talk to an actual human being to solve my problem only to be ran in a robo-circle instead.

41. No I'm not. Meanwhile, you're explicitly breaking DU posting rules.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules_detailed.html

Paragraph 5, "Civility"
Do not publicly accuse another member of this message board of being a disruptor, conservative, Republican, FReeper, or troll, or do not otherwise imply they are not welcome on Democratic Underground. If you think someone is a disruptor, click the "Alert" link below their post to let the moderators know.

There are few actions less liberal than trying to coerce all people to hold an opinion similar to your own.

Meanwhile, IMO the enforcement provisions in the health care bill that I alluded to are likely to create strong political blow-back as general awareness of them spreads, damaging the Democratic Party's brand. Prison and massive fines, enforced by the IRS, are the tools of authoritarianism, not liberalism. Did you like it when Bush wanted to know what library books you checked out or that the NSA was listening to your phone calls and scanning your emails? They also used the IRS to probe US citizens for financial behaviors suggestive of terrorism. Change "terrorism" to "healthcare" and the same M.O. applies. Why is cramdown any better when we try to do it than when they try to do it?

It's not. In fact, it's worse. We're the liberal party.

Don't worry, I won't suggest that you move to another board where you wouldn't be violating the rules. ;)

12. Evil AND a terrible, terrible, terrible company.
I can't tell you how many people, myself included, have HORROR stories about Verizon's service. Incompetent is far too generous an adjective. If I had a dime for every minute I've spent w/ Verizon 'Customer Service' and 'Tech Support' trying to get them to fix their own screwups, I could probably buy a top-of-the-line iPhone and have enough left over for a nice bottle of much-needed-post-hassle wine.

Verizon service has been wonderful for my wife and I...From hardware service to actual working service. My wife and both have wonderful service even in the Georgia Mountains.

Not really familiar with the claims being made that Verizon has actively tried to kill protesters. I will check back if links are posted.

Sorry about your bad experience with Verizon...We switched from Sprint for reasons much like you described about Verizon.

20. I live in rural'ish VA, but I've got friends from DC to Maine with a little less hair on their heads
thanks to old Verizon. My nightmare has been with their internet service (the ONLY one we can get out here) but others have experienced trauma with their TV and/or wireless products.

Glad to hear you hear you aren't part of our merry band of victims. :) And yes, Sprint is gawd-awful too. They bought Nextel and our cell phone service has been crappy ever since (but we're on a really good/cheap month-to-month plan having long-ago toughed out a 2 year contract, so we are kind of stuck with their dreadfulness too. :( )

43. I get it for the money aspect but Verizon and Sprint are the only CDMA networks anywhere.
Kinda dumb unless they are thinking of changing to GSM. The rest of the world uses GSM (Sim Cards), its a faster technology with more room to improve. A smaller iPhone with a smaller screen that will suck. I love my iPhone and it is the perfect size, the big screen is an awesome selling point. I have a 16GB 3G when my upgrade comes around Ill get the newest one and if its the last just keep upgrading the software and hold on to it until it dies.

54. The article makes some bad assumptions. It will NOT be CDMA, and these won't work everywhere
Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 05:50 PM by Xithras
The Apple guy in charge of the iPhone development gave a Q&A several months back and made no secret of the fact that the next generation iPhone will be GSM/LTE dual-mode ONLY. LTE-A is a new "4G" protocol, and both Verizon and AT&T have already begun projects to convert to it. LTE-A will be available in about 20 cities for Verizon customers next year, and AT&T is planning in rolling it out nationwide in 2011.

There won't be a "Verizon" version of the iPhone. Once Verison turns on its LTE network, the nextgen iPhone will simply work on it as-is. When AT&T gets their LTE rollout finished, the same phone will work on BOTH networks. The days of phones being incompatible across networks are finally coming to an end, though it will probably be quite a few years until total compatability happens.

Verizon customers, unfortunatly, are going to have range issues at first. If they leave one of the LTE-A upgraded areas, their phone is simply going to cease working. Without a CDMA fallback circuit, it won't be able to talk to most of their network. It will be like the early digital phone days, when it was possible to buy digital-only cellphones. If you wandered into an analog-only area, your phone loses signal...even though the guy three feet from you on his analog phone has four bars.

In other words, this is GREAT news if you're an iPhone envious Verizon user in San Francisco or New York, but it doesn't mean a thing if you live in Bakersfield or Amarillo.
