89. THIS guy was fired TWO years ago! Another example of
being forced out under the guise of "poor performance evaluation." The repercussions of being terminated probably reeked havoc in his life and it got to be too much! I'm not mad at him, myself. He probably took out the WRONG people which is unfortunate but you can only push people so far before they go over the edge. I predict similar events will become more frequent. Surprise, surprise, surprise!

56. Suggestions? ban them for poor people, minorities?
that is what the ban in the cities do. I promise you if I was forced to move to a city like NY or Chi a lawyer could secure a permit for me to carry in less than 30 days. Just give him 10K and let him figure out what to do with it. Problem solved.

The problem is not "america", it is a complex set of social issues that can be addressed. But that is hard work.

7. UPDATE- At Least 8 Shot In Downtown High-Rise
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 12:51 PM by brooklynite
from WESH:

ORLANDO, Fla. -- At least eight people were injured in a mass shooting inside a downtown Orlando high-rise just before noon Friday, according to the Orlando Fire Department.

...snip...

Dispatchers with the Orlando Fire Department said a shooting with multiple victims was reported on the eighth floor.

WESH 2 reporter Gail Paschall-Brown, who is at the scene on the ground, said that 15 employees came out of the building very distraught. Paschall-Brown spoke with one who said that a former employee came into the office who hadn't worked at the company in over a year.

At least six ambulances and dozens of police cars and fire engines have arrived at the scene.

13. Here in Florida
we have a law that says employees are allowed to keep guns in their car while at the workplace. I'm not saying there is a connection here, but if it is, I knew something like this was going to happen. Employee gets fired, runs to his car, grabs his gun, and starts shooting. Again, I am not jumping to conclusions but I gotta throw that out there.

I still dont get this whole unwillingness to address root cause. At some point people will look at these actions and see beyond the gun and try to figure out why people are doing these things.

23. I agree entirely
I won't turn this into a gun rights discussion (I will save that for the proper forum), so I will end it with this: the fact that gun laws are so lax makes does make it easier to commit these atrocities, whatever the root cause may be.

105. We have two laws that automatically spring to mind
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 03:47 PM by bluevoter4life
One is a law that allows an individual to carry a gun, in public, at a place "they have a right to be". This is of course restricted in the case of police stations, schools, government buildings, etc, but they can carry a gun into the grocery store, to a city park, a shopping mall, etc. Another law states that a gun owner may keep his gun in his personal vehicle at his place of employment. I'm going to try to find the exact statutes.

Edited to add Florida statutes.

107. So you would pull the CCW (no open carry in fl) law and make securing a weapon
in your property illegal? How does that impact a person who is going on a murder spree 2 years after they were fired?

Did this person have a CCW?

I dont understand the correlation between laws people like me follow and a person who chooses to break the law and go on a murder spree.

111. We don't know what exactly happened
At this point it is all speculation. Maybe the firing didn't set him off. After it happened 2 years ago, that in of itself is a very weak argument. But, maybe there was some sort of business deal between the gunman and the company that set him over the edge. Maybe the company refused to give him backpay he might have deserved. These are just things I am throwing out there at the moment. It doesn't matter if he had a CCW in this case. But the fact that there were 2 deaths (confirmed) and several wounded tells me that this isn't some cut and dry spree. I think he went in there knowing who he wanted to kill and the rest was collateral damage. The point is that he went in there with a purpose. Why these people? Why this company?

But to answer your question: Pulling the CCW law makes no sense. However, passing a law that allows people to carry a gun in their car while either at work or in a place of business is completely and utterly stupid. I could be wrong. Maybe he obtained the gun by some other means. Maybe this guy had some business with this company recently, didn't get what he wanted, then went out to his car grabbed his gun and started shooting. He did get away in a vehicle so this isn't out of the question.

112. Here it is a workers right thing
you cant get fired for having a weapon secured in your car. This is nice for legal gun owners. People who are going to go on a murder spree probably will not benefit from this law.

115. You are right
But everyone has a breaking a point and a gun simply makes things worse. This guy may have been the nicest person you've ever met, with no prior history of criminal activities. This allowed him to purchase a gun legally. However, someone sent him over the edge and suddenly, this nice guy who never did anything wrong in his life now has a murder rap to his name.

29. we are a million miles away from figuring out why people do anything
don't wanna sound like bartcop but if you think it's easy to figure out people and their motivations and figure out what they're going to do, you have a controlled environment where you can do it any day of the week and make good money if you're right -- the poker table

i think you will learn instead that, much of the time, you're just kidding yourself that you can get into another person's head and know their mind or what they're thinking or if they're lying -- if you even get good enough to get decent probabilities you'll make good money -- and you'll still be wrong a shocking amt of the time

i don't know what people are suggesting when they say "let's look at the root cause," "let's get people in treatment," but i'm pretty sure that they're suggesting that they or a doctor somewhere can read someone's mind and tell if he's dangerous, which simply isn't true

TRYING to read people's minds and determine who is dangerous used to result in huge numbers of innocent people being locked in mental wards, destroying a life that way is just as terrible as shooting someone, maybe worse because you have not only destroyed their life and taken their freedom but you have discredited them

i don't know what the answer is but running around and locking up every loony who ever left a loony post on the internet will cost this nation billions and do much more harm than good IMHO -- we already lock up too many people and yet the shootings continue

there are no cheap, easy answer and looking at the root cause of crime, which people have done for 2,000 years at least, has never resulted in any type of useful answer

51. Outliers vs. core.
so the majority of gun deaths in the US are suicide. That could be reduced by access to real mental care. Now if you are poor you will never get regular access to care until you act.

Many other deaths are driven by drug violence. These are deaths driven by a black market product.

The truly random killings will remain. They happened before the gun existed and will continue when that technology is obsolete.

My immediate suggestion is open access to psychiatric help, not 3 day holds and the boot. Secondly provide a state owned distribution for all recreational drugs. Destroying the motivation for much death.

When will we realize that people DO kill people with guns?

Everyone knows that people kill people with guns.

Most people agree, however, that we can't remove the right of the majority to keep and bear arms because of the actions of a few.

Out of the 80 million firearm owners in this country, only around 2% do anything bad with them.

Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 01:15 PM by pitohui
i've been wondering if there is some tie-in to the upcoming execution of the beltway sniper attacks

of course we are all supposed to pretend to believe that these were not acts of terror, because well bush/cheney didn't want to admit to any more acts of terror occurring on their watch, but i think most of us know better than that

there is something fishy about the history of the texas gunman, w. all our modern record keeping, we can't even figure out if he was in ROTC or not, or when he got his biochem degree (or not), c'mon, what's the story here, it's almost like the guy was a sleeper waiting to get a signal and go off -- this is the us army and they don't have records better than that for a doctor and an officer?

hate to go all tinfoil but my spidey sense is starting to tingle

time will tell i suppose

if there are multiple mass shootings leading up to mohammed's execution i for one am going to get out the reynold's wrap and not just for the thanksgiving turkey

even if some of them do seem like the standard fired nut -- why did he pick up his gun today, a year after being canned???

24. really what did we learn from capturing mohammed and malvo alive?
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 01:19 PM by pitohui
i don't object to capturing evil-doers alive but it seems like we've had more cover-up than revelation when we have captured people

mohammed won't be executed until nov. 10, he was captured oct. 2002, and seems to me we have learned fuck-all abt what his intentions were, at least fuck-all that was believable

same with tim macveigh, what did we learn from him other than some bullshit? he was gaming the system and making himself a hero in the run-up to his execution, we really didn't learn anything

i don't know what to think any more

i do think if there is a plan/plot/over-arching plan of terror -- and i do think m&m at least deliberately meant to terrorize the d.c. area -- then we are not going to be told the whole truth because it seems to be usa policy to downplay the numbers of terror incidents on usa soil

which is not even necessarily bad, terrorists do feed on publicity

3000 people were murdered by a group of Muslim terrorists on one day, and by terrorist activities on many days after that. So, when a Muslim shoots up and kills a bunch of people, they'll rush to pointing to that.
