EPA Sued Over Sept. 11 Contamination
NEW YORK (Reuters) - New Yorkers exposed to dangerous debris from the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center sued the Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday for failing to properly clean building interiors.
The suit, which seeks class-action status, was filed in Manhattan federal court by people who live, work or go to school near the site. They charged that the EPA avoided responsibility for the interior cleanup of buildings despite its legal obligations to do so.

The plaintiffs said that as a result of the EPA failure, they had been exposed to hazardous substances for more than two years and faced potentially serious long-term health effects.

They said the EPA had shown a "shockingly deliberate indifference to human health."

hope these folks get everything they are asking for in the suit. Wonder if Christie Todd Whitman will turn on her old bosses? That would be sweet.

5. As a retired UNION construction apprentice trainer
I can tell you that it is common knowledge that asbestos was banned only after the 1st tower's construction was almost complete. What this means is that tons of the lethal dust was floating around in the air @ ground zero. The bottom line is: hundreds if not thousands of people will be dying from asbestosis in the decades to come....... Thanks again, chimp!

7. The EPA and the Administration MUST answer for their irresponsible actions
When we went back to work on Monday, September 17, the whole place was absolutely sickening. In a firm-wide meeeting, a secretary asked the managing partner about the air quality. Isn't it dangerous, she asked. The managing partner told her that the EPA had informed him that the air was safe. Safe. I walked through that acrid, chemical stench for three months, until it finally started to subside in December. DECEMBER!

I am currently on the New York City Department of Health WTC Health registry, along with 25,000 others. I suppose we'll have to wait and see what develops. The Bush administration and EPA was irresponsible and probably tortious (and perhaps criminal) when they cleared the area for rehabitation. Now, folks in Oklahoma might say "We needed that to get the country back together and in action," and other folks may point to the "essential" reopening of the NYSE, but those folks won't have to live (and die) with the effects of these "symbolic" gestures, as so many of my friends and colleagues and I will have to. Shame.
