6. AARP lends their name and logo to other insurance companies
I don't believe they actually run their own insurance company.

"Insurers and providers pay a fee to AARP and its affiliate for use of the AARP trademark and other services. Amounts paid are used for the general purposes of AARP and its members.

AARP and its affiliate are not insurance agencies or carriers and do not employ or endorse individual agents."

7. So the short answer is yes...they are primarily an insurance company.
"Insurers and providers pay a fee to AARP and its affiliate for use of the AARP trademark and other services."

Which means that AARP makes most of its money from insurance.

9. Yes, just like Ford is primarily a tire company because their cars come with tires.

12. They're in bed big time with United Health Group

I would take their endoresement as an indication of how bad the bill is.

And AARP does not support a single payer system - not today, not tomorrow, not ever, never. Not surprising for a group that makes money shilling for insurance companies.

2. CNN has the story...
Washington (CNN) -- The push to overhaul health care is set to receive a major boost Thursday as the nation's largest organization of older Americans endorses legislation drafted by top House Democrats.
A Democratic source with direct knowledge of the matter said the AARP, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that advocates for people 50 and older, will come out in favor of the measure.

3. Direct, from one of the nations largest purveyors of health insurance!!!!!!
OK, why are we excited?

I keep getting throw away mail from this organization. Apparently they don't much care about wasting paper, and by extension, global warming.

5. I heard on the radio they are going to announce a new program
specifically aimed at Hispanic senior citizens...whom they say are being ignored..which translates to: AARP has not made any money off them yet.

8. Once AARP is down with it can there be any doubt it's sh*t?
We criticize Obama for reaching out for bi-partinsanship because we know it's futile.

Yet we expect this congress to do something not serving corporate interests. This too is futile. I recommend that in the next election cycle we turn out every incumbent, for Dems preferably in the primary, who hasn't strongly supported single payer. We must support only those who pledge to do what it takes to keep corporate money out of politics.

Ultimately the weasels we call congress just want to stay in power. They'll bend over for whoever they think will keep them in power. We've let it be the corporations for too long.

If AARP likes it, it's stopped being reform at all.

10. I think a few cynics who replied need to see the pragmatic side of this

AARP's membership is 50 years of age and older, a group that traditionally leans Repug. Many of their members aren't much into politics and any AARP endorsement will carry a lot of weight with them. For AARP to come out in favor of healthcare reform, including the public option, is a huge boost to the chances of this getting through the Senate.

Obama welcomes AARP backing of health care bill

By ERICA WERNER and RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR, Associated Press Writers 20 mins ago

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama scored two major endorsements for his health overhaul push Thursday and trumpeted the news as House Democratic leaders pushed toward a vote Saturday on far-reaching legislation remaking the U.S. health care system.

"I am extraordinarily pleased and grateful to learn that the AARP and the American Medical Association are both supporting the health insurance reform bill that will soon come up to vote in the House of Representatives," Obama said in an unannounced visit to the White House briefing room.

AARP is "no small endorsement," Obama said of the 40-million-member strong seniors' lobby.

"We are closer to passing this reform than ever before," Obama said. "Now that the doctors and medical professionals of America are standing with us, now that the organizations charged with looking out for the interests of seniors are standing with us, we are even closer."

The AMA, however, qualified its support of the bill. The organization's president, Dr. James Rohack, said the bill is not perfect, but it meets enough of the organization's goals to deserve its support. But he also said it's also critical for Congress to fix a Medicare payment formula that if left unchanged would lead to a 20 percent cut in fees to doctors next year.
