As Time Warner reported a 38% drop in third-quarter profit, Time Inc. filed a state WARN notice of plans to layoff an estimated 280 people by the end of January.

Time Inc., whose revenue decline put a speed bump in Time Warner's third quarter earnings report on Wednesday, will lay off 280 employees, according to a filing with the New York state Department of Labor.

The layoffs will start in November and extend through the end of January, the notice said. A Time Inc. spokeswoman described the number as an estimate the layoffs that will be needed to reach the company's cost cutting goals.

The Time Warner division is seeking to cut $100 million, according to reports. Company executives are expected to brief employees about the extent of the cuts on Wednesday.
