Carly Fiorina to announce run for U.S. Senate
November 4, 2009 | 8:06 am
Former Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive Carly Fiorina will formally announce her run for the U.S. Senate this morning at a news conference in Garden Grove.

“Throughout my career I've brought people together, and I've solved problems,” Fiorina said in a statement. “And that is what is needed in our government today. People who are willing to set aside ego and partisanship and instead work to develop solutions to our problems. … As California's senator, economic recovery and fiscal accountability will be my priorities.”

Fiorina will face off against Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (R-Irvine) for the Republican nomination. The GOP candidate would compete against incumbent Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, who is seeking a fourth term.

“I look forward to engaging Carly Fiorina on the issues Californians care about: out-of-control federal debt, soaring government spending on bailouts and stimulus, a pending government takeover of healthcare, and Barbara Boxer's huge energy-tax increase disguised as cap-and-trade," DeVore said in a statement.

1. Don't let her get in...
After the way she screwed up HP, it can only serve as an example as to what she would do, if elected. Besides, I don't think that she's CONservative enough for the RepubliCON party these days.

3. I would just fucking carpet bomb the media with ALL of her HP-era press
I live in Silicon Valley, and know many people who worked under the high-tech Queen of Mean. Hell, I worked at HP for a month as a contractor during the Carly years and it was one of the single most depressing times of my career. I've never been around a more CONSISTENTLY unhappy group of people.

So yeah, let's re-live all of those memories. Let's re-tell the stories of what it was like when Carly's golden ass sat on the throne. Let's tell those stories to anyone who will listen.

5. She spoke at the
Republican convention and I cannot stand her so I'll be donating to see that Barbara stays.Even though I am 100 miles away. It's not like I can change the politics here in Georgia anywho so I might as well put some money where it might be more visible.I can't stand how these republicans go around trying to pluck out our best.

7. I don't think a rehash of HP family corp fight will get us anyplace. IIR, HP was ready to tank and
the stock price was in the tank. I believe share price doubled or better during her stay. Share price is the only score card, management style can be passed off as part of the glass ceiling problems.

Don't fall for this trap. It will be a tough race and I would give her the lead right now.

It is the only reason anyone has ever heard of her. She took over HP and ran it into the ground.

23. During the campaign, she was all over the airways.
I didn't know her from a hole in the wall but as soon as she opened her trap, I knew 'who' she was. A rude, mean, nasty right-winger. Then I looked her up - bingo!

April 2009, the business magazine web site Condé Nast Portfolio listed Fiorina as one of the "The 20 Worst American CEOs of all time," characterizing the HP-Compaq merger as widely regarded as a failure, and citing the halving of HP's stock value under Fiorina's tenure.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carly_Fiorina

Clearly HP was not ready to tank prior to Carly's arrival. Using your most important management measure - stock performance, Carly Fiorina was a total failure. Fiorina drove HP stock into the ground.

Not much of a surprise...but no one misses Fiorina neither investors or employees.

27. Fiorina was one of the worst CEO's in history.
Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 01:27 PM by Xithras
Yes, the HP share price increased vs. the dollar during the dotcom boom, but it decreased in value when compared to the sector as a whole. While their competitors were tripling or quadrupling in value, HP rose only lethargically, and then later tanked. It's a heck of a statement that their stock value jumped the day they finally fired her.

Fiorina took a broad ranging technology company that made everything from high end medical equipment to computers, and systematically sold off everything of value, leaving just a shell of a PC manufacturer that is no better or worse than Dell or Gateway. She eliminated the market diversification that kept the company stable in previous economic downturns because she bought into the dotcom hype and believed the future was all about the web and the PC. She completely misread the market direction. You can look at the company today and see how well that turned out for them. Agilent, HP Medical, and the other "fluff" she sold off are pulling in billions a year and are highly profitable, while the company that developed them, owned them, and enjoyed those profits before Fiorina, can only look on in envy today while it struggles to remain financially sound.

Fiorina should have been prosecuted for corporate malfeasance. She systematically destroyed the company through her lack of foresight, and destroyed the long term stock value of the company. She may not have been prosecuted, but that IS a crime.

30. Associated Press says Fiorina's six year reign killed HP's stock price.
According to the Associated Press, "Carly Fiorina's nearly six-year reign at Hewlett-Packard Co. ended abruptly Wednesday as board members forced her out, disappointed by her inability to transform a plodding technology giant dominated by printer sales into a more nimble innovator. H-P's stock, which has gone nowhere for two years and is down two-thirds from its peak in 2000, rose almost 7 percent after earlier soaring almost 11 percent on the news of her ouster."

25. She'd have a shot against Feinstein, but no chance against Boxer
She must be smoking the good stuff.

A Fiorina/Feinstein matchup would really leave me torn. I haven't voted for Feinstein for the past several elections because I can't stand her. The thought of Senator Fiorina, on the other hand, scares the crap out of me. Mrs. "American Don't Deserve Jobs" needs to be elected Senator in India, not California.

20. She might have a chance in a different state, but not in CA

We know all too well how she practically destroyed HP.

In a strong rebuke to her management at HP, the stock jumped the day the board fired her.

26. "economic recovery and fiscal accountability"????
This asshole fired thousands of HP workers, fully supported and practiced free trade and job offshoring, created ill-advised and failed mergers and spent twice as much to earn the same revenue as when she started five years previous. Oh, and she got 21 million dollars for her "awesome job". Tough Choices indeed.

This is what I don't get. How is ANYone from the GOP ballsy enough to make such a claim, when all evidence points to the exact opposite happening?

And it's not recovered since.

And you're right - she got rewarded for it all. Like how the rest of us would get if we caused the near-destruction of a company...

Anyone who votes for her is a fool, on too many levels to count...

Edited on Wed Nov-04-09 08:26 PM by mule_train
rech CEOs usually at least screw workers for shareholder benefit, she couldnt even swing that (she screwed workers super hard)

the compaq merger was the dumbest move in the industry

compaq was already choking and dying from the ill advised mis-fitting purchase of digital equipment

the industry was having the table run by lean and mean dell

all stupid caley had to do, was eat popcorn and watch compaq suffocate

but she blew all of HP's money buying it, to the horror of the hewlett family
