NBC Calls Virginia Governor's Race for GOP's McDonnell
Edited on Tue Nov-03-09 08:08 PM by Hissyspit
Source: NBC News

In Virginia, NBC News declared that Republican Bob McDonnell had defeated Democrat R. Creigh Deeds.

Interviews with voters leaving polling stations in Virginia showed that independents — the crown jewel of elections because they often determine outcomes — broke heavily for McDonnell. Exit polls showed that nearly a third of voters in Virginia during the day described themselves as independents and they preferred the Republican to the Democrat by almost a 2-1 margin.

It was a reversal of a year ago when independents in the pivotal swing state and across the country tilted heavily toward the Democrats, fueling Obama's White House victory.

In another troubling omen for Democrats, the surveys also showed that more of the Virginians who turned out on Tuesday said they supported Republican John McCain in 2008 than said they backed Obama. That suggests the Democrats had difficulty turning out their base, including the swarms of first-time minority and youth voters whom Obama attracted as part of his diverse coalition.

I live in Virginia and I knew Deeds wouldn't win, (I voted for Deeds anyway, but I didn't have much hope). I figured the outcomes as soon as Deeds became the Democratic nominee and then when I saw how his campaign was going I figured it would take a miracle to get Deeds elected. He did nothing to attract the core in Virginia who got Obama elected and turned Virginia blue for a second. These voters didn't vote for McDonnell they didn't vote at all.

Plus there the curse that Virginia never votes in a Democratic Governor when there is a sitting Democratic President.

4. Seems no one gets it that you have to have a "supporting cast" to get the job done
in the White House. This Country is way to screwed up. I am disappointed.

8. Oh wait wasn't he the one that refused help from the White House?
Hmm not too strange to go down in flames if you don't even care if Obama campaigns for you....

Enough said...

11. Is anyone really surprised about this?
How long of a honeymoon does McDonell get before the people of Virginia and their media get to bash him.

12. VA seemed like a lost cause a while back
I think both McAullife and Deeds were terrible candidates (though I can't see how McAullife would have done any worse).

And from what I saw, Deeds ran an inept campaign and didn't really go after Northern Va, the way a Dem needs to. And in ways he ran against Obama. How stupid.

15. Virginia seems to have forgotten what it was like with Republicans in charge
of the state and what has been done with Democratic leadership. This state was in financial ruin. It will go back to the way it was and all will suffer from the mismanagement that will surely come our way. It is a sad day, very sad day. There are lessons to be learned but I don't think anyone is looking. If you don't deliver you can expect people to turn out. In two years if the voters aren't happy with the Democratic majority then they will stay home again. Wake-up and smell the writing on the wall.
