Chicago Cubs Have Lesbian Owner

Friday, The family of billionaire Joe Ricketts, the founder of Omaha, Neb.-based TD Ameritrade, paid $845 million to buy
a 95 percent controlling interest in the Chicago Cubs, their ballpark, Wrigley Field, and 25 percent of Comcast Sportsnet….
And with that purchase, The Windy City Times is reporting that the Chicago Cubs, possibly Major League Baseballs unluckiest
team, will be the first team with an openly gay owner, because among the purchasers is Laura Ricketts, an open lesbian.

1. Women must stop being marginalized in soft/slow ball and not wearing hats in the outfield.

3. Not to mention that women are not allowed to register for the draft
We're still a long way off from true equality.

5. These headlines really piss me off
Would there ever be a headline says "rich hetero-sexual male buys sports franchise"?

I don't like distinctions that are made from gender, race or sexual orientation. They do the same thing when they have news articles regarding my Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin. How about describing someone as a Democrat or Liberal before these other qualities?

7. As a straight guy I think it shows real progress.
I have no doubt that there have been gay owners, players, coaches, trainers, and scouts for many professional teams
but to have one who is out of the closet and up front about it to me @ least, shows progress. In the long run the success of her
group of owners will not be judged by anything to do w/ sexuality but w/ win vs loss margins, getting to the world series,
and if the business makes money.

I wish we a lived in a cotton candy, blue skies, and everybody gets a pony world where the news that an out gay person
is doing something is not news but we still live w/ bigots and stupidity* and having a Lesbian in a very public "boys club"
such as MLB helps push back some of the nastiness of the homophobes.

11. Agreed.
As a gay man and a rampant baseball follower, I'm pretty confidentally drop some names of players, etc. Of course, that's just not nice.

13. It'll be real progress when this sort of thing isn't even a 'story'.
As long as it's 'news', we have a ways to go.

10. Novelty, along with timeliness and other factors, is one characteristic that determines news.
It was news when Jackie Robinson came up to the big leagues. It would not have been news if he had been white, or if he had not been the first black player in the big leagues. Similarly, this angle on the story would not be news if she were straight, or if she were not the first lesbian to own a professional baseball franchise.

Really, I don't see what the big deal is.

12. While I appreciate that you posted in sincerity,
the snarky remark about softball and the photo addition really doesn't support your position. If you think it's a good, noteworthy thing, why not say that instead of making a remark that implies the opposite?

17. please .....
Ever heard of over the top? I really doubt that they will replace baseball for women's softball @ Wrigley field.

BTW some women softball players are lesbians and where did i say that was a bad thing or that a lesbian is now
one of the Cub owners and that is a bad thing too?

Lighten up you will live longer.

Got it. Didn't realize you were still in middle school.

Forgive me for assuming you were an adult capable of taking responsibility for your own juvenile remarks.

9. Its worth noting.
That another partial owner is Pete Ricketts who ran for the Senate on a anti gay marriage, traditional values platform.

Dem into their club.

That really is progress.

But all kidding aside it is great to see any woman get a baseball team through means that don't involve a husband passing away.
