Army soldier arrested after C-4 explosives found
November 02, 2009 13:26 EST

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- An Army Special Forces soldier has been arrested following the discovery of about 100 pounds of explosives at his Tennessee home.

Federal and military officials searched his home early Monday morning after a pair of hunters found the C-4, a plastic explosive, in a field outside Clarksville. The house is near the Fort Campbell, Ky., Army post where the soldier is based.

Maj. April Olsen, a spokeswoman for Army Special Forces at Fort Campbell, said the soldier, who was not identified, is currently being held in the county jail.

Twitter A pair of hunters walking in a field in Montgomery County found cases of explosives Sunday that contained about 100 pounds of C4 explosives.

At about 11 p.m. Sunday, officers with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad, ATF and FBI recovered the explosives at 1880 Johnson Road, according to sheriff's spokesman Ted Denny.
Investigators have a person of interest, whose name has not yet been released, and are continuing to investigate, Denny said.

3. I hope he wasn't able to get detonators.
C-4 just burns if you set fire to it. You need something else to make it go "bang."

100 pounds of the stuff would have made one hell of a bang.

The rest of the story is going to be fascinating if we're ever allowed to know it.

6. IIRC, Tim McVeigh's fuel oil/fertilizer truck bomb was rated equivalent
to an explosion of 100lbs of C-4.

10. Oh HELL no.
C4 is 1.3 times more powerful than TNT. The Oklahoma City bomb had the equivalent of 5000 pounds of TNT in it. To duplicate that you'd need 3,750 pounds of C4.

11. Well, then, I guess I recalled incorrectly.
I thought C4 was much more powerful. My mistake.

Maybe what I read said 1000 lbs of C4, not 100 (though that I guess would be too light as well).

7. I was in the Army and Air Force.

The same way this happens...

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/06/us/06bomber.html

But different methods.

It is easy... you know more then a few guys at the base... a little paperwork adjustments on what has been used up... bingo ..right out the gate.

Scary... this is only what we learn about.

8. ONE HUNDRED POUNDS of C-4???
Sorry, I have a hard time believing this was a lower echelon job. Some higher-ups had to know about this.
A hundred pounds of C-4 is almost enough to blast Nashville into North Carolina (OK, not really, but that
much of the stuff can do a LOT of damage if a competent demolitions guy sets it up). If, say, a President was
visiting anywhere near a blast that big, he might not survive it. I hope the Secret Service is requesting
to be kept in the loop when this case gets taken apart.

9. It's like post-Waco america all over again!
Soldiers as high as LtCol. were stealing firearms, ammo and explosives back in the mid 90's when they assumed Clinton to be the anti-christ, or some other BS militia fantasy.

Never heard anything on the local news about but our county Sheriffs are rumored to be looking for "missing" guns, rifles and/or ammo stolen from Bragg.

The neighborhood grapevine has been going strong about it. Not sure how one investigates once missing weapons hit civilian areas so may be much ado about nothing.

Lotta smoke but no fire, yet.

15. Claymore mines have more than a pound of it in them
That is of course until the GIs strip them for heating their rations.. Most every claymore in our unit was useless most of the time..

16. No foolin'. Those Claymores got pretty light
after guys had been carrying them around in the field a while. Just a little pinch of C-4 to heat the ham & limas--stir fast so that incredibly hot flame doesn't blacken the food in the bottom of the can--and tomorrow another little pinch for the canned "beefsteak" & spuds. I also remember having a few pounds of C-4 around that we used, a small lump at a time, for heating a perimeter bunker during the monsoon season. Well, we were cold & wet & miserable, ya know.
