Iraq bombing suspect kills officer

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 01, 2009
02:07 MECCA TIME, 23:07 GMT

At least 150 people were killed and 500 others injured in last Sunday's attack in the Iraqi capital

A man being questioned in connection with a massive bomb attack in Baghdad has killed his interrogator before being shot himself, Iraq's interior ministry said. The man, who was not identified, snatched a gun from a guard, wounding the guard, and killed the investigating officer, a statement on the ministry's website said on Saturday.

"One of our police officers was killed by a suspect involved in Sunday's bombings," the statement said. The statement said that the incident occurred at 22:00 GMT on Thursday at the Criminal Investigations Directorate in the capital.

The man was shot and died after being rushed to the hospital, but interior ministry officials did not specify whether he had turned the gun on himself or been shot by police.

The announcement came shortly after the United Nations confirmed a special envoy would be visiting Baghdad on the following day to make preliminary findings on security after last weekend's bombings and a similar attack against government offices in August.
