NJ Law Enforcement Appear to Contradict Dobbs' Version of Gunfire Incident

Freelance journalist in Brooklyn

*snip*

Interviews with the New Jersey State Police yielded a rather different assessment of the events described by Dobbs. In a phone interview conducted yesterday, Sgt. Stephen Jones, a NJ State Police spokesperson, chuckled out loud after he heard about Dobbs' account of the gunfire incident. Jones commented that he "wouldn't classify it as very unusual." He also confirmed that there are hunters in the area, and stated that, "at this time of year hunter complaints go up."

He observed that in the ongoing police investigation sparked by Dobbs' complaint, "nothing has been determined what the intended target for this bullet was." Nor did Jones confirm whether the shots near Dobbs' house appeared to be an accident or intentional.

Another New Jersey State Police spokesperson, Sgt. Julian Castellanos, noted that "it's a wide open area and there are hunters in the area." Castellanos explained that the bullet had hit the house in vicinity of the attic; it "hit the vinyl siding and fell to the ground" without penetrating the vinyl, he said.

- So it was just as likely that it was a member of the NRA whose bullet bounced off Lou's thin coating of vinyl siding. I wonder what kind of bullets are they using in NJ that can't even go through vinyl? They must be hunting Monarchs.

Anyways, somehow I just don't see him bitching about hunters on his next program though.......

1. Odd that the cop didn't mention what type of bullet it was..a hunting bullet is
Edited on Fri Oct-30-09 01:42 PM by flyarm
pretty specific, and rather different than a hand gun bullet..you would think if the cop mentioned hunting he would be specific about the type of bullet..

My hubby is an avid hunter and i can not believe he would be irresponsible enough to shoot his rifle anywhere near a home! Now that doesn't mean there aren't idiots that would be irresponsible enough to shoot near a home or residence..but i wouldn't call anyone doing so a hunter.

6. If it didn't penetrate the vinyl, the shot was from very far away
even a .22 long can travel a mile.

12. Yep. For that matter, could have been a ricochet.
A bullet skips off a rock or the like, and goes a completely different direction--minus a good bit of it's original energy.

In any event, a bullet that bounced off vinyl siding might hurt a person if it had hit them, but probably not in a life threatening way.

4. well
Since it Bounced off I doubt it was either one, if it bounced off of vinyl siding it was most likely a spent bullet from a long ways off , could have come from a hunter more than a mile away....

3. Hmmm, maybe Mrs. Dobbs is sick of his bigotry too...
and fired a warning shot given she was arrested for trying to board a flight with a LOADED handgun, lol.

Dobbs' wife arrested for having handgun at Newark airport

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The wife of CNN "Moneyline" host Lou Dobbs was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday for having a loaded handgun in her handbag, authorities said.

Debi Dobbs, 49, of Sussex, was arrested at the security checkpoint at Terminal C after the gun was discovered, according to Allen Morrison, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport.

She was arrested at 3:15 p.m. without incident, Morrison said. Debi Dobbs was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and released on her own recognizance.

Morrison said Debi Dobbs did not tell officers why she had the gun.

16. Probably to protect herself from "terrorists" at the airport
What are the odds the Dobbs family engages in profiling at every chance they get?

I'd say about as much of a chance that it will be rather warm in Death Valley in August.

19. Oh no! Not Debi Dobbs!

- Yeah, somebody at the NJ State Troopers should check her gun to see if there are any shells missing and if it smells like its been recently fired.....

Or am I confusing that with the Butterfly Effect?

8. I don't think that you would find any of the B*sh family in NJ.
I would look in Texas, Florida, Maine, Connecticut, and the DC Metro area.
On second thought I would wait a few days as there are too many vampires out this weekend.

- And I'm sure that shooting him was probably considered, but only if necessary.

allegations?

I posted on the first thread that I did not believe anyone shot his intentionally, but that's a separate issue.

"Police seemed skeptical" is about as far as I could honestly go on the basis of this story.

13. A bullet that bounced off the siding has to have been fired from a very long distance.
Even a weak rifle bullet will penetrate siding from anything approaching normal range. If it was fired from long distance (say half a mile for a .223 Remington, a mile or more for .308 or 30-06) then the likelihood that it was someone intending to shoot at his family as Dobbs claimed is basically zero.

14. You cannot hunt with rifles in NJ, only shotguns.
They use punkinballs (from a shotgun) for deer hunting. The generally flat terrain and the density of population make this necessary.

18. About those "falling-bullets...."
The Wiki sez:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebratory_gunfire#Falling-bullet_injuries">Falling-bullet injuries

People are injured, sometimes fatally, when bullets discharged into the air fall back down. The mortality rate among those struck by falling bullets is about 32%, compared with about 2% to 6% normally associated with gunshot wounds.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebratory_gunfire#cite_note-Ordog1994-4">5) The higher mortality is related to the higher incidence of head wounds from falling bullets.

- What do you think the odds are that a racist, right-wing-fruitcake talking head will get it in the end, by way of a stray-bullet? I mean... theoretically?
