Iowa Republican: The Dolphins new owners "far more offensive" than Rush Limbaugh
Source: Miami Herald

The brouhaha over Rush Limbaugh and the NFL reached Congress Thursday, as a Republican Congressman used a hearing to defend the radio talker -- and suggest the Dolphins new part owners are "far more offensive."

Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, said he saw nothing offensive in comments made years ago by Limbaugh about quarterback Donovan McNabb, and pressed NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to say exactly what he disagreed with. Goodell criticized Limbaugh when the radio talk show host was part of a group trying to buy the St. Louis Rams. The group eventually dropped Limbaugh from their bid under fire from people such as Goodell.

"I would point out that you have a couple of owners that have performed lyrics in songs that are far more offensive. In fact, I don't think anything that Rush Limbaugh said was offensive, but with Fergie and with J. Lo, they have, between the two of them, alleged that the CIA are terrorists and liars, they've promoted sexual abuse of women, they've used the N-word, verbal pornography, recreational drug use, et cetera, and they are owners of the Dolphins."

...

"Now, I've scoured this quote to try to find something that can be implied as racism on the part of Rush Limbaugh, and I can't find it, ' King said. "There is an implication of racism on the part of the media. …And so if you're concerned about this, Mr. Goodell, then I'd ask you, you know, are you prepared to level the same charges against Fergie and J. Lo, or are you prepared to apologize to Rush Limbaugh today?"

1. Which quote, Steve?
Try this one - "We're supposed to bend over and grab our ankles because he's black"

But he does make watching CSPAN somewhat entertaining. His floor speeches are quite amusing.

I am so embarrassed for my state! He really is not representative of the people here. I wish he would just SHUT UP!

43. Well, in that area of the state maybe
they are a really red corner of the state, most of the rest of the state really is fairly progressive and don't like Steve King as a rep of out state.

45. So he's a fair representation of his district? Well, that's how
politics generally works. I accept it because it works both ways. As for King, unlikely he'd get a statewide office though and that's the system working, too.

Cheers.

I knew a production assistant who said that she required that no one look her in the eyes. Weirdo.

Edited on Sun Nov-01-09 07:26 AM by NashVegas
And if you ever stood in the shoes of a performing artist, you might be a little more sympathetic about what they have to put up with from "fans." Prince owes paying ticket holders a good show far more than he owes any backstage gherm a good story.

34. It's a Boundary Thing
Edited on Sun Nov-01-09 07:33 AM by NashVegas
Unfortunately, some people make more personal demands on performers than a performer will always have the time, patience and emotional room to give. Boundaries have to be set. No one - not the performer, not their posse, or whatever - will psychically know that you are the exception.

Edited on Sun Nov-01-09 09:35 AM by No Elephants
True or not, though, it's not exactly on a par with racism, wanting the President of your country to fail, etc.

Gee, another direct quote from a friend in the field, that just happens to support the Republican side of the issue. Imagine that.

Again, I urge you to get some Progressive friends. You being a Democrat, you'd probably have so much more in common with them and have a better time.

Just trying to look out for a fellow Democrat here.

5. See...
and the republicans say they are not racist, haters and do not support nuts.
Besides why are they beating up on the NFL chairmen. It was the group he joined that asked him to resign. And that was their right. The NFL had nothing to do with it. Altho the players on the team said they didn't want to play for him, they didn't make the decision.

But republicans now they don't need the truth. They just say what looks good for their side, no matter how many lies they tell.

Far more fun to stick his ample proboscis into other people's business. You know what Mr. King and Mr. Limbaugh should do? They should start their own professional football league! Fuck yeah! Free market, baby! A little competition is just what the NFL needs.

15. Stupid, if Limbaugh werent taken seriously by so many and did not have a political show ...
that he claims is news it probably wouldnt matter. Also Mark Antony is the Dolphins half owner he just married to J-Lo and I know married people are one person...unless you are famous. If the drugster were say a comedian or a singer you know someone with a talent it probably wouldnt have mattered as much.

19. It's all well and good to hit Limbaugh,
but what about the offensive statements made in the song lyrics? They're heard by many many many more youth, especially, than is Limbaugh. And what exactly makes the bend over statement racist? It could well have been made about a white president. Just asking.

Or other sins committed in the lyrics. I don't listen to these artists, so maybe you could help us by quoting directly. Thanks.

and then I'd like to know why you find them offensive. I am not willing just to take King's word for it. Why are you?

As far as the bend over statement, really? How many times have you heard anyone say "We're supposed to grab over and grab our ankles for the President just because he's white?"

I call mega bullshit.

26. Rush always qualifies "union" with "thugs"
and he rarely says it any other way, it's almost always "union thugs".

I'd like him to walk into the Rams locker room and smart-off to his union thugs then.

But if he is so anti-union, he shouldn't have ever even been under consideration for ownership of an NFL team which has union representation at every step of the players' way.

25. I don't think "racism" was ever really the problem
with Limbaugh. Its that he has the potential to turn off half the NFLs customers, Democrats. Thats something a business has to consider.

Thats different from J Lo or Fergies lyrics. They are not hateful and derisive of half the country.

I don't think Limbaugh's remark about McNabb was racist, or the one he made about gangs. But I still think the NFL had to be concerned about offending half its customers. Id say the same about someone like... Michael Moore, if he ever wanted to buy into a team.

Its not about political ideology either. Someone like George Will or Paul Krugman would be ok.

And there was also the bit about the players not wanting to play for him.

31. I'll assume he's referring to songs written by others or movie scripts
but yeah, Steve King is an idiot. It wasn't really a PR thing for the NFL, it was that many players wouldn't play for the Rams, hence the ownership group came to the realization they couldn't field a competitive team w/ Rush being a part owner. That's not the case w/ Fergie or J.Lo
