Doyle: Medical marijuana restrictions senseless
Source: Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. - Gov. Jim Doyle says he supports legalizing medical marijuana in Wisconsin if a law can be written that restricts its use to people who have a doctor's prescription.

At an appearance in Wausau, Doyle says he has no problem with the use of marijuana to treat severe pain and other medical conditions, if it's prescribed by a doctor.

Doyle's comments come after a decision by the Obama administration not to prosecute users and suppliers of medical marijuana in the 14 states where it's been legalized. The decision is a clear break from the policies of the Bush administration.

The governor says restricting the use of medical marijuana makes no sense when doctors can already prescribe more dangerous drugs like morphine.

Very happy to read this.... Thanks Gov. and you are right. To deny medical marijuana is senseless.

1. The governor suffers from a basic misapprehension:
Federal law does not recognize medical marijuana. Doctors get their licenses to prescribe drugs from the DEA. If a doctor prescribes marijuana, a Schedule I Controlled Substance (like heroin) with no accepted medical use under federal law, the DEA jerks his license. Thus, no doctors prescribe medical marijuana.

Instead, the laws in the medical marijuana states are written so that doctors "recommend" pot, not prescribe it.

Doyle may be unaware of the distinction, or he may just be speaking loosely, or he may be trying to look like he supports it when he's going to end up not supporting it. I don't know.

3. He wouldn't be the only Politician to need an education on the realities of drugs and their use.
The only thing they can get from the Government is Propaganda masqueraded as science. When it comes to drugs the government is in a psychotic break.

7. It seems like it, but I'm talking on the Federal level.
The DEA is a Federal thing, so until pot is legal there, any state law is going to have trouble.
