Oscar-Nominated Actor Paul Winfield Dead at Age 62
Oscar-nominated actor Paul Winfield dead

Actor starred in 'Sounder,' 'King,' 'Roots: Next Generation'

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Paul Winfield, an Academy Award-nominated actor who was known for his versatility in stage, film and television roles, including a highly praised 1978 depiction of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has died. He was 62.

Winfield died Sunday of a heart attack, said his agent Michael Livingston.

In 1968, Winfield played the boyfriend of Diahann Carroll in her situation comedy "Julia" -- a role that some suggest helped open television to other black performers.

Four years later Winfield's portrayal of the father in "Sounder" earned him an Academy Award nomination for best actor.

He was Emmy-nominated for best actor in the title role of the 1978 miniseries "King," and nominated the next year in the best supporting actor category for playing a college chancellor willing to sing Negro spirituals to get donations for his school in "Roots: The Next Generation."

8. This isn't good...
...I remember him from a story arc on WISE GUY. He was a record producer. A guy who really 'believed' in the music more than the business. He really brought some 'gravitas' to the roll. I had Cameron's TERMINATOR on the other day(what a dumb movie!) Winfield was in that....

I hardly watch Tee Vee, but do remember him in that Arni one quite well.

13. Some forgotten roles:
Star Trek II - The Wrath of Kahn (a captain)

short-lived sitcom, titled (I think) "Happily Ever After" - as the "Magic Mirror"

18. He had another "Star Trek" role on the "Next Generation" series
where he played an alien captain who was forced to face Picard alone on this isolated planet, and neither could speak the other's language. Picard had to figure out his syntax-bending speech. They started out as adversaries and ended up as allies. It was a cool episode. R.I.P. to a great and under-appreciated talent.

That particular program has lived on vividly LONG after it was aired. It was a remarkable performance.

16. Indeed
A very classy actor, indeed. One of the first times I saw him was in Damnation Alley with George Peppard and Jan Michael Vincent. Poor character.....he ended up getting eaten by a bunch of giant cockroaches.

17. Ugh...I remember that.
That scene scared the living crap out of me.

He was also in a movie called "Green Eyes," that made me bawl. He was a Vietnam vet who went back over there to try to find the illegitimate kid he'd had with a Vietnamese woman.

I love City Confidential too. Who can replace him? That great voice.

19. Darmok!
Paul Winfield and I shared the same VEt for the past two years. I have a pug and he had many pugs (there was a picture on the wall with him and all of his pugs.) He was in that Star Trek episode that people mentioned (Darmok and Gilad and Tonagra) and of course I LOVED him as the narratorof City Confidential and only watched it because of his sarcastic, witty and gleeful way he used cheesy metaphors that were appropriate for the "city" but made fun of the people involved in the story. Very sad loss.

I am a major fan of Paul and will miss him a lot. His deliciously wicked narration of City Confidential MADE that show. It will be difficult for me to hear another voice replacing him. :(
