Most Would Use Force to Stop Iranian Nukes
Source: Pew Research Center

Support for Talks and Sanctions, Skepticism They Will Work

The public approves of direct negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program, although most Americans are not hopeful the talks will succeed. And a strong majority – 61% – says that it is more important to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, even if it means taking military action. Far fewer (24%) say it is more important to avoid a military conflict with Iran, if it means that the country may develop nuclear weapons.

There is broad willingness across the political spectrum to use military force to prevent Iran from going nuclear. Seven-in-ten Republicans (71%) and two-thirds of independents (66%) say it is more important to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons even if it means taking military action. Fewer Democrats (51%) express this view; still, only about three-in-ten Democrats (31%) say it is more important to avoid a military conflict with Iran, if it means Tehran may develop nuclear weapons.

1. And yet DUers still ask without laughing "why not let the public decide whether to go to war"...

Fools.

2. THe pro-Israel neocons have brainwashed the public.
People don't understand how bloody and costly the Iran war would be. After getting ass kicked in Iraq (25 million) - only saved by paying vast sums of peace money to various tribes and getting ass kicked in Afghanistan (population 5 million) despite paying vast sums of peace offerings to various warlords, some people's libido is not quenched -- they want to fight Iran (population 65 million), a heavily mountainous and fanatic country which, unlike Iraq or Afghanistan is armed to the teeth.

3. This is what happens when one party takes advantage of Television

4. I wouldn't.
I thought we left the republican error (aka era) behind when we elected a Democratic President and a Democratic Congress and a Democratic Senate.

22. Ah ... I think I see your problem ...

As someone (almost) said upthread:
>> This is what happens when the one party takes advantage of
>> Television and uses it to get their philosophy out to the public.

An amazing amount of the US public is fooled into believing that they
are somehow in power ...

7. We should've invaded North Korea and taken out Kim Jong-Il if it is solely about proliferation.
This is about geopolitical power in the region. There's hundreds of billions of barrels of oil in the Middle East. If Iran were nowhere near close to that oil, it would be treated the same way North Korea was treated.

Last time I checked, nobody has been so bellicose as to threaten a huge war on North Korea or its 1.2 million-man army or its stockpile of chemical weapons and nuclear warheads.

Not to mention Israel. Maybe they don't count, because we gave them theirs.

18. are you seriously asking?
Where do you think they got the nukes that they have? Why do you think we don't apply the same standards regarding nukes for them that we do all other countries?

20. I've never heard anyone claim that they got nukes from the US
Pretty much everyone agrees that Israel developed its nuclear program primarily with France.

21. Yeah, the French provided them with a heavy-water nuclear reactor.
They used that to mill their weapons grade material for a-bombs and very likely h-bombs in their arsenal.

8. That is sad
Americans know so little about Iran. The current political structure can't last too much longer there. The demographics are against the ruling class. Democracy of some sort will come.

they want for them what we have here today, an oligarchy. :(

10. The results of the poll would be different if it involved a military draft to fight Iran.
Because taking down a country the size of Iran would require an occupational force in the low millions of soldiers to police a population almost 80,000,000 in size. Not to mention that half the country is sitting on top of the jagged Zagros Mountain Range, which would be well suited to a blood-soaked guerrilla war against any occupation force.

12. Not to mention the ramifications of an attack on Iran

A third war against a Muslim nation would completely destabilize the Middle East.

13. this confirms that 80% of the frikkin' us public are dumber than a pile of rocks.
the same 80 that was the % of us public supporting the bushwhacko's iraq war. guess they had to sublimate their unrequited lust for war into some avenue or the other, before they came to tear each other to pieces.

now while the us public jerks off to their video game world of war whoring, tsar vladimir putin will make the last call on this installment of stupid. he'll tell the amerikan idiots just where they can piss draw their line in the sand, on iran. yeah; like russia is gonna let assholes from halfway across the world, come in and blow up their backyard, ad lib. color me stupid if russia doesn't already have their own nukes & teams, locked & loaded, right inside iran.

why the hell does the amerikan public - after getting their ass kicked in several instances from the 1950's through the 21st century - still imagine the world is their private toilet, to be pissed in at their personal pleasure?

15. Interesting
Are they actually polling the criminally insane?

61% of which want to go to war with Russia.

61% actually support the Chinese dumping those T-bills into the toilet.

An interesting poll.

19. We could afford a war with Iran...
All we'd have to do is lower our scientific research to 0%, raise taxes to 100%, build the Statue of Zeus to increase Iran's war weariness, and bribe a few countries into declaring war on Iran first. That would give us a good fifty turns to produce enough units to invade... Wait, this is real life? Oh I'm sorry, I thought we we're playing Civilization IV. You mean real life is different?
:sarcasm:
