Officials release body of hanged Ky. census worker

LONDON, Ky. — Authorities have released a census worker's body to his family nearly a month after he was found dead with a rope around his neck in rural eastern Kentucky.

His son tells The Associated Press investigators released the body Monday but are still telling him little about the case. Josh Sparkman says he's making arrangements to have the body cremated as his father requested.

A family visiting a Clay County cemetery found Bill Sparkman on Sept. 12, a rope around his neck, his hands and feet duct-taped. The coroner confirmed the word "fed" was scrawled on his chest.

The state medical examiner's office has established the cause of death as asphyxiation, but police have not said it was a homicide.

The FBI is investigating, and has said that it's being treated as a homicide. However it's pretty clear at this point that the local police are stalling.

11. UPDATED STORY - With a bit more information

Josh Sparkman said police had released his father's pickup truck, which was found at the scene, and he is now driving it. Although he says police have told him nothing, he remains certain the death was a homicide.

He said many things, including a census laptop and personal items like his grandfather's wedding ring, were missing from the truck and were not on a list of potential evidence that investigators kept. State police Capt. Lisa Rudzinski confirmed the laptop was not found in the truck but declined to comment on the other items.

"They ransacked that truck," Josh Sparkman said. "That's more evidence this is not an accident or suicide. This is a homicide."

Sparkman said he was working on organizing a memorial service for his father but hadn't scheduled it because he is broke and hasn't found a funeral home to host it. He said he would like to do it soon.

i've been obsessed with this case since i heard about it, especially since i think there is some kind of news blackout going on. i've read from one reporter who is on the story, Robert Stacy McCain "the other McCain", an independent blogger who reports for tips. (sorry, no link, computer illiterate)

in the absence of information there has been a smack-storm of nasty speculation and name-calling. i indulged in some of that behavior myself, unfortunately. one thing i've noticed is that everybody talks about how Mr. Sparkman was murdered. i agree that murdering a federal worker while they're on duty is very very bad, m'kay? but there's more to it than that. his corpse was desecrated. i guess that's too disgusting to talk about but desecrating Bill Sparkman's corpse is awfully similar to what those Iraqui insurgents did to those contractors in Falloujah. i have had this nagging fear for years that the US could become balkanized, we are too young a nation not to have more civil war.

so the FBI has been down in Clay County since 9/12 investigating whether of not Bill Sparkman's murder had anything to do with anti-government sentiment.
