Toomey takes narrow lead over Specter, poll shows (US Senate PA)
Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Voters in Pennsylvania, now by the slightest margin, favor Republican Pat Toomey over Democrat Sen. Arlen Specter in the 2010 race for the U.S. Senate, a poll released this morning says.

Mr. Toomey, with 43 percent, edges Mr. Specter's 42 percent, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll.

This reverses a 45 percent to 44 percent lead July 22 by Mr. Specter and wipes out a 20-point lead he held May 4 just after Mr. Specter had switched from Republican to Democrat to escape a primary battle with Mr. Toomey.

From Sept. 22 through Monday, 1,100 Pennsylvania voters were polled with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

-----

"Toomey and Specter are neck and neck in what could be a 13-month horse race," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The challenger's ability to close the 53 to 33 percent gap in Quinnipiac University's May 4 poll is evidence that the longtime senator's decision to switch parties to avoid a potential loss to Toomey in a GOP primary may not be the magic bullet for reelection that he had hoped it would be."

It may be time for Specter to go, and Joe Sestak would be my first choice as well

9. From a state that elected Santorum
I wouldn't bet against Toomey. There's a lot of RW loonies in this state who would vote for Toomey.

6. don't worry..
Everybody hates Specter so I am sure there are a lot of people saying "Toomey" in polls who won't possibly consider electing him once the choice actually comes down to it. Sestak people probably also have an incentive to say "Specter" now.

8. First of all, Specter is not a Democrat, he is an opportunist POS
Pennsylvania Democrats are blessed with having a REAL Democrat on the Democratic primary ballot: Joe Sestak.

12. Strong words. However, I live in Pa and still intend to campaign for a vote for Specter.
I grew up with Specter being first our DA and then our Senator. Sestak may be a good man, but he is doing nothing but allowing Toomey more of an opportunity to gain ground and I resent him for that.

13. If you want to support the man that gave us the 'Single Bullet Theory" in JFK assassination
what does that say about your choice? The puke Specter began his political career as a Democrat and switched to GOP when it became convenient. He has done it again this year!

19. Specter only became a Democrat bc polls showed he could not win a Rethug primary; and I resent that.
Edited on Sun Oct-04-09 04:53 AM by No Elephants
If you work for him, fine, but doing it out of admiration for the way Specter has voted. Do it because you think that Specter will have a stronger chance than Sestak to beat Toomey in te election. Do it because you think that Specter, if elected, is likelier than Sestak to do a better job in the Senate for Democratic principles (and therefore for the nation. Don't do it to spite Sestak, though. That's like cutting off your own nose to spite the face of the Democratic Party (and therefore the nation).

On your theory, no candidate, no matter how worthy, should ever try to primary an incumbent, no matter how unworthy, because that would theoretically only help the leading candidate of the other Party. IMO, if Sestak wins in the primary, he will have a much better chance of beating Toomey than does Specter, a played out Republican who made a 100% cynical change of Party--and not for the first time in his career, either. Who the hell can respect him as either a Republican or a Democrat at this point?

I hope to heaven more real Democrats try their respective best to primary Republicans pretending to be Democrats and succeed. There are quite a few Purple Snakes in Congress, Specter being only the most transparent.

Toomey is a real RW kook backed by Scaife. Wait until the electorate gets to know him and his scary policies a little better. Until then, these polls are BS until the election is closer.

16. That gives me heartburn

How does that happen in a state that went bigtime for Obama and kicked out Santorum in a landslide.

Speaking of rightwingers and elections, Santorum has started a run for President.

18. Toomey v. Specter = 2 Reputhuglicans running against each other. Sestak would primary Specter
easily, if Obama would back him. But, Obama made his pact with Specter. Here's hoping Sestak wins the primary, anyway.

21. Next November's elections will be bloody for the Dems
The Senate is safe, but the Repukes will probably pick up enough House seats to make Boner the speaker. It's been a disastrous 8 months.
