Poll: No bounce for Bush
http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/polls/2004-03-08-poll_x.htm

WASHINGTON (USATODAY.com) — President Bush got no bounce from his first foray last week onto the campaign trail against Democrat John Kerry, a new USA TODAY/CNN/Gallup Poll shows.

Despite a series of speeches in which he attacked the Massachusetts senator's record and warned that the country would not be safe under his leadership, the poll shows that if the election were today, Kerry would beat Bush, by eight percentage points — 52% to 44% — among likely voters (Complete poll results).

3. I'm Surprised he Didn't Plummet Actually: The BEST Part Though!!!
Edited on Mon Mar-08-04 03:54 PM by Beetwasher
But hey, this is still good...Best part is this:

"Bush was on the defensive against Democratic attacks that he was politicizing a national tragedy by using images of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center."

"More than half of those surveyed — 54% — said Bush's use of the images in the ads was inappropriate."

--snip--

The ads can't be discussed anywhere without this being pointed out. Ha Ha!

Where are all the putzes saying only Bush haters would be offended by the ads?

Also:

"Bush's approval rating fell back to an all-time low of 49%. It has floated in a narrow range, just above or below 50%, since mid-January."

Oh My!

41. I don't think he even had a dead cat bounce
A "dead cat" bounce means a rise in stocks based purely on some novel news story; basically, a rise with no momentum or meaning behind it. Bush has had a few of those, most notably with the Iraq invasion, and then with Saddam's capture. It's pretty noticeable that a whole week of campaigning resulted in *no* change at all! That means the voters are basically going, "Uh, ok, ya got anything new, dipsh*t? No? OK, buh by."

- that even a dead cat will bounce if thrown down far, hard and fast. Gruesome but that's it. Bush didn't even get that, just splat.

who understand that if we get a big "terrorist event" now, it will look as though Bush CAN'T protect the country. Bush is between a rock and a hard place when it comes to trotting out another LIHOP/MIHOP event, because there will be no cover for him - it will be the 2nd TE on his watch - a lose/lose situation for him.

59. I think you are right...
I was researching sites on coups this weekend and some senior official said exactly that off the record. Last summer, Jay Garner said that after he left Iraq to "Cigar Aficianado" magazine in Italy, I have that printed out. He said-if we have a mass terror event, our "experiment with democracy" will be over and there won't be an election in 2004" I think if Bush's numbers get too wide, something big will happen so they can declare martial law. I also think when they invaded Haiti from the north, right where the Cuban doctors were, they were hoping CUba and Venezuela might respond and they could of got their trifecta to take them all out at once. They just couldn't buy enough Aristide Police ahead of time-you know they tried...

wow that is some spread--it is at the same time scary. I can imagine to what ends George Bush will go to to steal the election-another tragedy. How about an assassination attempt? I think it may be too late for that even. He and Laura will screw that up with bad acting also. It may be too late for George and no amount of money, or cries of terra terra terra, can change the American's perception of this miserable failure. :bounce:

24. More people support Kerry, but more think Bush will win
Despite the support numbers, a majority of Americans are skeptical that Kerry will actually win the election. When asked who they felt would win, regardless of whom they supported, 52% of those polled said Bush would win and 42% said Kerry would be the victor.

I have seen these types of figures before. Is this typical for an incumbent? Or are people resigned to some shenanigans, if needed, by Bush's team?

My goodness! If Republicans are seriously counting on Bush's speeches to produce a 'bounce' in the polls, then they are even more out of touch with reality than I had imagined. I humbly suggest that they create the 'bounce' in the polls they are looking for using a tried-n-true tactic that has served them well up to this point: rigging.

"He is seen as less likely than Kerry to change his positions for political reasons; 49% said Kerry would, and 37% said Bush would."
and he is stronger in foreign affairs?? The only reason for bush to have an opinion on an issue is what ever benefits him politically or economically. Sometimes changing your mind is a GOOD thing, if it turns out evidence shows you are wrong! And how in the world can anyone think he does a good job in foreign affairs-Iraq, Afganistan, Haiti, American reputation ruined and Americans more hated, alienated all our friends. HOW can they think bush is better at foreign affairs????

64. Miserable failure
That is why OTHER things than his sterling personality will be brought to bear. Surrogate attacks(but the GOP network is pretty well known), presidential incidents of fear and glory, a boost in the stock market from artificial timeliness.. Stuff like that.

Yet those cuddly pictures of Bush actually seeming to work receptive crowds has got to go. More protesters everywhere of course, but especially more Kerry among more and more enthused and concerned people has to drown out this rather pathetic triumph of the cheap photo op. Plus Bush can't campaign and go on vacation indefinitely- or dredge up image building presidential crises without blowback- can he?

Put the heat on and make him crack. He can't take eight months of constant losing pressure. The schmoe still thinks he is entitled to win in November. I want to see him chilled before spring, sweating in the summer and a roasted turkey by Thanksgiving.
