RI GOP official resigns over Wilson outburst
Source: AP

PROVIDENCE - The chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Hispanic Assembly and member of the Republican Central Committee says he has quit the GOP because he was embarrassed by South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson’s outburst during President Obama’s address to Congress on Sept. 9.

Wilson shouted “You lie,“ when President Obama said illegal immigrants would not receive benefits under his health care plan.

Ivan Marte tells The Providence Journal that Wilson’s behavior was “shameful” and “uncivilized.“

Marte says he has been disenchanted by the GOP since Gov. Don Carcieri ignored his advice concerning the 2008 executive order cracking down on illegal immigration.

to impress their relatively tiny base: as well as deliberately insulting minorities, they also, unintentionally, grievously insult the large majority of whites, who find such loutish behaviour simply inappropriate for someone who is supposed to be representing their (grown-up) interests in public life. They do a great disservice to their party, who need to be more subtle in expressing their divisive attitudes and aims, not less.

Edited on Mon Sep-21-09 03:11 PM by AlbertCat
I don't get why anyone would join a group which simply and obviously does not welcome them. Hispanics, blacks, gays...hell, even women, are not welcome there. They will always be considered second class members. You'd think if they cannot bring themselves to be Dems, they'd would go Indy.

I have even told somewhat long term friends to step off, don't call, don't write, because I don't traffic with traitors.

I asked him if he was voting for Obama.
He told me, "No. McCain."
I said, "So, you're a log cabin republikkan?"
He said, "Yes."
I said, "Ahhhh...The Log Cabin Republikkans. The 21st century equivalent to Jews for Hitler."
He called me several names and walked out.

he doesn't pull any punches, it seems. He'd get my vote if I were in RI.

Yet, Chafee, during Senate hearings, impressed me too.

From Wiki:
According to Michelle R. Smith of the Associated Press, when asked whether he felt that his loss may have helped the country by switching control of power in Congress, he replied: "To be honest, yes."

Linc left the Repig party some time ago. There is talk he may run for RI Governor as an Independent. Unfortunately the Democratic party in RI is totally corrupt almost beyond imagining as well as composed of idiots, so he may not wish to be associated with them.

19. Kudos, but I'm aways surprised what it takes to wake up a Republican. A million murdered in Iraq,
hundreds drowned by a slow response in New Orleans, an economy in ruins... no problem. But a rude Congresscritter, and he goes Twisted Sister? Okay, but what was he thinking before?

22. That's exactly what I was thinking.
Not allowing school kids to listen to a speech from their president? Illegal wire tapping, torture? Why did they go along with that?

I too am always interested by what the tipping point is. For my dad it was Reagan's talking about limited nuclear war. For Sully it was torture, for John Cole it was Terry Schiavo and Graham Frost and the marble counter tops. It is interesting.

Edited on Mon Sep-21-09 04:24 PM by wpelb
If he's so principled, why didn't Marte resign a day or two after the outburst? I realize that resigning may require some paperwork, etc., but announcing it only takes a press release or a news conference. Once the ACORN videos surfaced, the Wilson story went at least to the back burners, if not off the stove completely. The man's got to learn how to use the news cycles for maximum effect!

According to the article: "Marte says he has been disenchanted by the GOP since Gov. Don Carcieri ignored his advice concerning the 2008 executive order cracking down on illegal immigration." Maybe he should have thrown in the towel last year.

But then again, I'm not a Republican, so I don't know how members of that party think.

34. It doesn't take too much idealism to be offended...
over direct affronts to your ethnic group, though Marte's resignation does put him on a higher plane than, say, aggressively anti-minority minorities such as beloved Fox News commentators Linda Chavez, Starr Parker, and Jesse Lee Peterson. Still though, it's disturbing that Marte was pleased to be a Republican all through BushCo's Iraq warmongering and Katrina.

Hey, maybe he's been unhappily stuck in the Repuke Party and looking to bolt like Lincoln Chafee.

Maybe with Chafee they are forming an Independent Party since Governor Carcieri-R is on his way out. . .really lame, as a person, as well as in "duck."

Vermont has their wonderful Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, so why can't RI have some independent candidates?

RI does have The Independent Man statue atop their state Capitol, ya know.

Hey, whatever works to end the yahoo Carcieri administration!
