China seizes 53,000 guns as National Day celebration nears
Source: Peoples Daily

Chinese police have confiscated close to 53,000 guns by the end of August in a nationwide crackdown started in March this year, and 9,849 suspects involved in gun-related crimes were punished, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) said Thursday.

The ministry started the special crackdown on explosives and gun-related crimes in March, and said it would continue till China's Oct. 1 National Day celebration.

The crackdown is part of the ministry's campaign to maintain public stability, as this year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Police also confiscated more than 2 million bullets and 120,000 imitation guns, the ministry said.

1. Can we infer that "public stability" is threatened in China?
Why yes, yes we can.

7. More than a few.
For now, at least, Norinco has been prohibited from exporting to the US. I don't know if it's a permanent ban.

They ran into trouble when they were caught bringing in fully automatic military weapons, including RPGs. None of those weapons ever entered the legal firearms market, they all just disappeared into the landscape.

I have seen pictures of unlicensed Chinese M-16 clones here in the US. Many pro-gun people were enthusiastic about shutting down Norinco imports, although there are those who miss the inexpensive Chinese (armor-piercing) ammo.

Norinco had purchased original tooling for making M1911s and M-14s (Semi-auto in the US). It was prudent to replace some parts if you acquired one, but they were faithful reproductions, popular with collectors.

10. Is that documented?
I'd never heard anything like that full auto story, and frankly it has always been my assumption that the Norinco ban had more to do with protectionism than anything else. They were flooding the US market with SKS rifles: cheap, reliable, semi-automatic carbines. Low power, but comparable to an AR-15, and at a fifth of the price. Domestic gun manufacturers would have had a fit at that.

31. Many Were Imported Before The Ban...
Semi-auto Kalashnikov's, SKS's, and various others. Ammunition also, and the quality, at least in my experience, is quite good. I have one of the first AK-type imports, a Clayco Norinco, I purchased in '83 (or'84, can't remember exactly), and have fired probably several thousand rounds through the thing without a hitch. My Polytech Legend is extremely well-made and finished.

8. I live in Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province, the provincial capital
It is great being out at 2:30 at night and knowing NO ONE has a gun.

It's wonderful that I don't have to worry about some nut going apeshit and shooting up a China Post because God told him it was a good idea.

BTW, I've seen the police take guns (happened to my neighbor). Five officers in wrinkled blue shirts knocked on the door, said there was a suspicion that there was a firearm in the apartment, walked in, took the firearm, shook the owner's hand and left. No incident, no nothing. Oh, and my neighbor is still there.

Please do not believe everything that comes out of China is bad. Most of the news is pure bullshit and I learned that living here.

"Massive police presence" usually means some officer in flip-flops and shorts standing or sitting drinking Laoshan pijiou while on duty armed only with a walkie talkie. When the "black suited cops" show up, it's time to leave. I saw them once, at an internet bar, when some guy got into a shouting match over 5 yuan.

:sarcasm:

BTW, did those officers have a warrant to enter that apartment, or can they just walk in whenever they feel like it? What would have happened to that neighbor if he had refused, I wonder?

25. Same could be said for our country:
Rendition, warrantless wiretapping, government sponsored torture, School of the Americas, slavery, destruction of native Americans, the glass ceiling.

Come on man. . .you apply American ideals to Chinese society and culture. Weak.

30. This Poster Has Misunderstood Me...
Yes, I know how streets in China are identified. I too have lived in China (Wuhan, Hubei). The "surrender-drive" in question is not the name of a street, but of a state initiative to encourage those who posses firearms to turn them into the PSB promising no prosecution and sometimes cash in return, like a "buy-back" program here in the U.S.

11. Of course they would.
No one may threaten the sons of Mao in Beijing. Maybe they'll use those weapons on monks or sell them in Africa or Iran.

"They are outdoing us in every way!"

Then move there comrade, see how posts you make on the net criticizing the government before you get a knock on the door.

13. Now the only ones who can threaten the Chinese people with guns
are government agents or the PLA.

FWIW, I own one of those banned Chinese SKS rifles. It was Chinese Army surplus, cleaned up and refurbished for re-sale, probably for under $80 retail here when it was first imported. I bought is several years ago for around $185 (after the "ban") - and I just sold another one 6 months ago for $275 to a dealer. I like them - they are a good, handy size, auto loaders holding 10 shots, shoot a cheap, available cartridge very similar in power to the old .30-30 deer cartridge. They are very sturdy and reliable rifles.

All Norinco firearms and ammo imports were banned for trade/political reasons. The ammo as far as I know was never "armor piercing" - it was surplus (old and in poor condition) Chinese Army ammo. Its main virtue was that it was dirt cheap, sometimes given away by the case with the purchase of a $75 rifle.

It is the same round that is used by the AK-47.

Your definition of "progressive" is apparently a little more authoritarian than mine, unless that was intended as over-the-top sarcasm.
