Ohio Plans to Try Again as Execution Goes Wrong
Source: New York Times

CINCINNATI — The State of Ohio plans to try again next week to execute a convicted rapist-murderer, after a team of technicians spent two hours on Tuesday in an unsuccessful effort to inject him with lethal drugs.

..

The only similar case in modern times, Mr. Dieter said, occurred in Louisiana in 1946, when electric shock failed to kill a convicted murderer, Willie Francis. He was electrocuted the next year, after the United States Supreme Court ruled that executing a prisoner in the wake of a failed first attempt was constitutional.

..

Mr. Broom was convicted of the 1984 abduction, rape and killing of Tryna Middleton, 14, who had been walking home from a football game in Cleveland with two friends.

4. Well, God D-mn AmeriKKKa then!
Serious,

Even the vilified Taliban recognize the ancient tradition that if a man is to be executed and somehow he survives the ordeal (rope breaks, he recovers, the guns jam) it's a sign from Allah/God that he was not destined to die today. Therefore, he is not only not executed, he is to be released.

And they follow through on this. Such as when they found two Homosexuals who, btw, were witnessed by four men in the act of Sodomy. They put them at one side of a brick wall and had a bulldozer push down the wall. Except they crawled out from under the rubble and though they needed hospital treatment (one broken arm, or such) they survived. They then didn't try to execute them again because it would violate Allah/God's will. Presumably, the "Afghan Village People" kept it indoors from then on.

Executing a person after a failed attempt is murder.

5. Not really us case law or tradition to uphold that.
if it was we would execute people by some method with no survival. Like guillotine or gas chamber.

7. Murder is the UNLAWFUL taking of a life!
It does not apply to a justified execution. This guy deserves to die at the hands of the state. How about showing some sympathy for the victim's family?

16. "This guy deserves to die at the hands of the state."
That's an opinion that's far from universal.

8. Well, Mr. Boom earned his fate.
No tears or shirt-rending here. If they can't find a vein then they should breakout the noose and scaffold.

10. Of course he did...
Because no jury verdict was ever found to be wrong.

I'm sorry, I just don't think that capital punishment is right. You cannot ever go back an apologize to someone who was mistakenly killed by an execution.

14. Reading the article made me ill. The DP is abhorrent to me.
Edited on Thu Sep-17-09 08:39 AM by FedUpWithIt All
I do not think that killing should be viewed as anything other than what it is. Killing as retaliation is primitive. As a society we will continue to deal with the consequences of the baseness in our social fabric if we persist in allowing our policies and justice to be set to such a low standard.
