Minor stroke puts Keillor in hospital
Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune

Minnesota humorist and author Garrison
Keillor had a minor stroke over the weekend
and has been at the Mayo Clinic's St. Marys
Hospital in Rochester since Sunday night, a
hospital spokesman said this afternoon.

Keillor, 67, suffered his stroke Sunday
morning and "is up and moving around,
speaking sensibly, working at a laptop, and
it's expected he'll be released on Friday,"
said Mayo spokesman Karl Oestreich. "He
plans to resume a normal schedule next
week."

In 2001, Keillor underwent open-heart
surgery at Mayo for what was described as a
common valve repair.

A Facebook page for the host of radio's "A
Prairie Home Companion" initially reported
his hospitalization, unleashing dozens of
get-well wishes in response.

10. Here's one of my favorite quotes of him:
"So the Republicans have decided to run against themselves.
The bums have tiptoed out the back door and circled around
to the front and started yelling: “Throw the bums out!"
http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2008/10/npr_host_garrison_keillor_rips.php

I printed that out and have made several fridge mags of it. Quite popular!

Or ... better yet ... buy the book on CD ... I listen to it nearly every night as I go to sleep. It'll make you so proud to be a Democrat!

16. I met him at a Kerry fundraiser
I posted this elsewhere before I realised the thread was up, but I met him at a fundraiser for John Kerry at which, for understandable but disappointing reasons, Kerry didn't show. He was nice enough to wish me well as a writer and then went out and kept the enormous crowd eager and happy in spite. I have loved his work forever, and aspire to have him read one of my poems on The Writer's Almanac (and am terribly envoius of two friends who have had that pleasure).

Be well and do good work, Mr. Keillor.

23. The local news reported it was a minor stroke
that he is up and around and "writing on his laptop" and expected to be released by the end of the week.

He originally went to a hospital in St. Paul but was moved down to Mayo because, per a press release he put out "they know all about me there" (that's where he had heart surgery a few years ago).

He is expected to make the season premire of PHC on Sept 26.

25. Get well soon, Garrison. And eat your Mournful Oatmeal.
A cool dude.

He sings back up on a CD I have of Stephen Foster songs sung by Thomas Hampson (known as Thomas Handsome in opera female groupie circles).

Garrison sings backup on "Hard Times Will Come Again No More".
