Canadian (cold-water survival) research aided CIA torture techniques
Source: Canadian Press

OTTAWA - A Transport Canada employee says he was "flabbergasted" to see his research into cold water survival referenced by the CIA.

Chris Brooks of Kanata, Ont., wrote a manual years ago aimed at improving the odds of sailors and fishermen lost at sea.

Newly-declassified CIA documents indicate the Canadian handbook was used to fine-tune the CIA's cold-water interrogations techniques.

A 2005 CIA manual refers to the Transport Canada publication "Survival in Cold Waters: Staying Alive" to set the limits on cold water exposure to reportedly soften up Al-Qaeda suspects.

The agency also referred to cold-water survivability research conducted by Gordon Giesbrecht of the University of Manitoba.
He stressed that while his research was always ethically conducted, he added that "we've often jokingly referred to this as 'torture' - it was just brutal."

8. It is an ages old story.
No matter how sincere the scientist’s intentions were toward doing good, there will always be some perverted mind who can find a way to twist it to their own evil purposes.

Shouldn't the CIA have needed permission from Brooks to use his research and manual?
