Rep. Charlie Melancon to run for Senate against David Vitter
Source: Times Picayune, New Orleans

Three-term Congressman Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, announced today that he's running for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican David Vitter.

Melancon, 61, former president of the American Sugar Cane League, a lobbying group, described himself as "pro-life, pro-gun Southern Democrat."

-snip-

In the video, Melancon said he's a "proud family man, the father of two great children," noting that he and his wife, Peachy, "celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary just last week." His family ties are likely be an emphasis for Melancon because of Vitter's 2007 admission that his phone number had appeared on the list of a Washington, D.C., escort service years earlier and that he had committed a "very serious sin."

"Today, I'm announcing my candidacy for the U.S. Senate to replace David Vitter because Louisiana deserves better. Louisiana needs a different approach," Melancon said. "More bi-partisan. More disciplined. More honest and with a whole lot more common sense."

3. I just read the NOLA article
I'm glad one of his top priorities is keeping Louisiana safe from terrorists. I live in Charlie's district and will vote for him over Vitter any day of the week, but if I have to live through months of "The terrorists are coming to get you" talk, I think I'll puke. Good luck Charlie.

6. He's a DARK blue-dog
Charlie is a very conservative, blue-dog Democrat. However, he'd be better than the piece of trash who occupies the seat now.

9. Consider the State...
Don't feel too bad....we're talking about Louisiana, the poorest and most backwards state in the union.

16. Nope
A *slightly* more liberal candidate (like Landreau) might have a chance, but otherwise we get Vitter.

23. I agree
Landreau as a progressive is horrible. She does have at least one redeeming quality though -- she votes for Reid. On top of that, she doesn't lead the fight for more reactionary policies.

24. Melancon--if you want our support, Vote YES on Health Ins. Reform
I'm ready to support Melancon, but if he casts the deciding vote in the House against health insurance reform, FORGET IT. And I would encourage every liberal in Louisiana to abstain from the election next yearn, . I understand conservative Democrats may stray often, but this issue is to important for him to stiff-arm us on.

19. There's word that Russell Honore may run
I don't know what his political affiliation is, but he's got about a 99% shot at winning if he does. There are few people respected more in Louisiana than that guy.

25. Seriously?
That would be very, very interesting. Honore was one of the folks who was most appalled by the FEMA fuckups of 4 years ago, and Vitter's district is made up of a lot of people who didn't mind seeing the poor and those of color disappear from the community.
