Obama: No hero's welcome for Lockerbie bomber
Source: associated press

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says the Libyan convicted in the Pan Am 103 bombing and freed Thursday by Scottish authorities must not receive a hero's welcome upon his return to Libya.

The president also said in a radio interview that the Libyan should be should be placed under house arrest.

Obama said his administration had made clear to Scottish authorities that Washington did not want the Libyan released and said it was "a mistake" to free him on grounds of compassion.

In the UK news tonight there is much shock at this sudden, gratuitous burst of Scottish compassion for the murderer of 270 people.

Nobody's yet calling for the restoration of the death penalty.

But UK/Libyan crude oil realpolitik is leaving a nasty smell.

5. Um, you know it was Iran that bombed the plane, right?
In retaliation for our having shot down an Iranian airliner a little earlier.

The real story is out there, and it ain't about his guy. He took the fall for his government, and his government took the fall for Iran, just to be able to move on.

Going head to head with Iran at the time might have caused disruptions to the oil and gas markets, so Clinton pulled a Dumbya. You DO know that wealthy Saudi's, including some royals, funded 9/11, right?. Same thing.

nobody on the news, nobody from the DU.

GLASGOW (Reuters) - An investigation lasting nearly four years has reopened the 1988 Lockerbie bombing case but dashed a series of conspiracy theories ranging from CIA dirty tricks to allegations of doctored evidence.

The probe by an independent Scottish review commission concluded on Thursday that there were grounds to believe the conviction of Libyan intelligence agent Abdel Basset al-Megrahi might be a miscarriage of justice. He will now get a new appeal.

The commission raised serious doubts over evidence suggesting that clothing found in a suitcase containing the bomb, and traced to a shop in Malta, had been bought by Megrahi.

Many of the familes of the British victims, led by Dr Jim Swire and the Lockerbie victims group do not believe al Megrahi to be guilty of the Lockerbie bombing. This compared to the US families who seem to have little doubt over his guilt.

The defence team of al Megrahi said they had evidence that the Maltese man who was the only man to identify al Megrahi was paid several million dollars for his evidence. As well as this, secret documents at the appeal court that now wont be shown since it didnt get as far as an appeal - The Uk government at Westminster has said the secret documents wont be released now on 'grounds of national security'. Also if it reached an appeal documents from the US Defence Intelligence Agency that say Iran was to blame for the bombing would have been presented.

9. No, they actually DID bomb the plane.
They bombed it in retaliation for Reagan "retaliating" for the West German disco they did NOT actually bomb.
