Series of explosions strike Baghdad, kill at least 58 people
Source: AP

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi police and medical officials say that a series of explosions have struck Baghdad, killing at least 58 people and wounding nearly 300 others.

The attacks in the Iraqi capital started shortly after 10 a.m. on Wednesday, striking near first near the finance ministry in northern Baghdad and then minutes later, near the foreign ministry next to the heavily fortified Green Zone.

The officials say the deadliest blast was a car bomb explosion near the foreign ministry, which killed dozens and wounded hundreds. The officials say the toll is expected to climb.

They say five other explosions, mostly from car bombs, tore through Baghdad, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens more.

6. I'd bet that the word "surge" is now translated in Iraq as
"Lie low, and reload."

8. You've got that right. Don't these guys ever learn the lessons of
history? A quick Google of "Russians in Afghanistan" would be quite instructive.

The English,American and French Revolutions had large numbers of middle class disaffected citizen members.

The Sunni group in Iraq is not an exception.

* Deadliest day in Iraq this year

* Follows U.S. troop withdrawal from urban centres

* Attacks raise doubts over Iraqi security forces (Updates death toll)

By Aseel Kami and Suadad al-Salhy

BAGHDAD, Aug 19 (Reuters) - A series of blasts in Baghdad killed 95 people and wounded 536 in Iraq's bloodiest day this year, renewing doubt over Iraqi forces' ability to maintain security after U.S. troops pulled out of urban areas.

Baghdad's security spokesman made a rare admission of culpability after the attacks, in which at least six blasts struck near government ministries and other targets at the heart of Iraq's Shi'ite-led administration.

"This operation shows negligence, and is considered a security breach for which Iraqi forces must take most of the blame," Major General Qassim al-Moussawi told Iraqiya state TV.
