PHOENIX, Arizona — US President Barack Obama will Monday offer Americans an update on the war in Afghanistan, days before a presidential election marred by Taliban violence and rising combat deaths of foreign troops.
Obama, on the last day of a tour of western states largely devoted to pushing his health care reform drive and sightseeing, is to give a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars service organization in Arizona.
"He's certainly going to talk about the commitments that the men and women of our Armed Forces have made in Iraq and Afghanistan, their contributions to the betterment of those two countries," Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said.
"He'll obviously touch on what we're accomplishing... he'll talk about where we are currently in both those two conflicts."
