David Cameron turns on MEP Daniel Hannan for anti-NHS tour in America
Source: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6795952.ece

David Cameron was today forced to rebuke one of his own MEPs who spent the last week on a tour of the United States rubbishing the NHS in a series of interviews.

Daniel Hannan, an outspoken and popular Conservative politician, gave a damning verdict on the British health service, telling American television viewers: “I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.”

The Conservative MEP for South East England has appeared regularly on Fox News this year criticising the NHS but today, after a popular backlash by the British public, the Tory leader moved to distance itself from Mr Hannan.

Mr Cameron said the MEP was wrong to have labelled the NHS a bloated relic that would destroy the US economy and risk American lives if it was emulated.

2. Naa, just deselect him.
Euro elections get decided based on party lists in the UK... if the Conservative Party don't put him on the list he doesn't get re-elected as a Conservative; he can stand independently of course but the chances of actually getting elected in the Euros as an independent is pretty slim.

Mark.

3. Yes - though he could possibly switch to UKIP and possibly get re-elected that way
Even that would be an improvement, however, as at least it would be clear to all that he is not representing mainstream British politics.

He's a vile man.

11. I could see him turning UKIP if deselected
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 02:07 AM by T_i_B
The only trouble with deselection is that there are quite a few people in the Tory party who think he's the best thing since sliced bread and as such I wouldn't bet on it. FWIW though, here's the petition for everyone to sign.

He does seem to have a bit of the Kilroy-Silks about him as well and would no doubt end up making more trouble then anything else if he joined UKIP.

5. I say deport his ass to America.
If he loves our for-profit, unregulated, pro-death insurance agencies, let him experience them first-hand.

6. Hannan is NOT "popular"!
The vast majority of people in Britain had never heard of him before his little speaking tour of US talk shows. MEPs have a place in the national consciousness somewhere below the Welsh national water polo squad. They're not even elected as individuals, but drawn from party lists- which is part of why you see such piles of worthless human garbage as Hannan, Roger Helmer and Diana Wallis among their number.

Anyway, after this it's fair to say that most people in Britain would not piss on Hannan if he were on fire, and see him for what he is- a lying, treacherous, repugnant, astoundingly stupid and venal extreme right-wing crackpot bastard, who revelled in hooking up with the bile-spitting fanatics of the US right who are squawking about Britain's best loved and most highly respected and treasured social institution being "evil" and akin to the Nazis- and who lied about the NHS in order to help ensure that 40 million Americans continued to be denied health coverage. Now that, my friends, is truly evil.

This whole incident has reflected so badly on the Tory party that for the first time in months Labour seem to feel they're in with a chance at the next election- they probably aren't, but given their desperate unpopularity even giving them a sniff of chance required a truly singular political act. I'd almost suggest that Hannan were a Labour plant- but surely any such plant would play things with a bit more subtelty, rather than just seeking to alienate and repulse the electorate in as startling a way as this idiot.

7. Very true.
Most people haven't heard of him. Those who did know of him before this kerfuffle did so mainly because he made an incredibly stupid statement a few years ago about how Iceland (one of the few Europaean countries not in the EU) had the best political and economic system in Europe, because they could pursue 'a Thatcherite agenda' without much national or international regulation. Fast forward to 2008 and the total collapse of the Bank of Iceland!

He is a disgusting RW 'young fogey' and is not popular in the least.

8. And now of course, Iceland is applying for EU membership
So if the Great Seer Hannan continues to enjoy such success with his prognostications, the US should be enjoying universal healthcare within months!

12. good lord

And that has something to do with the facts reported in the Times, and the outrage expressed EVEN BY people posting to the Times? All of which are common knowledge, and can be read and seen all over the media and the internet?

It must be all about the USofA, and FoxNews ... everything is, isn't it?

Speaking of FoxNews, here is Hannon on it:

to see how the British react to him.

Kind of like how Canadians have reacted to Shona Holmes. ;)
