Leaked Email: CNBC Went To Tea Partiers Looking for Angry Protests
By Zachary Roth - August 12, 2009, 12:21PM

CNBC approached Tea Party activists, looking for angry protest events that would make good television, according to a leaked email from a Tea Party discussion group. And one Tea Bagger responded by flagging an upcoming event that, he said, "should be a riot ... literally."

Yesterday, Tea Party Patriots national coordinator Jenny Beth Martin sent an email, obtained by TPMmuckraker, to a Tea Party google group. Martin told the group: "We have a media request for an event this week that will have lots of energy and lots of anger. This is for CNBC."

She then asked: "So, where are the big events this week and where can TPP best be represented on the news?"

Later that day, a Tea Bagger named Pat Wayman responded with a suggestion, also obtained by TPMmuckraker: "This one should be a riot! literally...." he wrote.

30. That's why I won't go to these things.
I'll be a sarcastic bastard and either be arrested for tossing some oldsters (which is exactly what they want in full view of their media in tow) or quite possibly shot at or stabbed, with my luck.

7. Seriously
Because of the media coverage of all these crazy fuckers..people look at our government and think we are shit.. This isn't the democratic process.. it's just a bunch of people making up lies and yelling.. and acting like they are "passionate protesters" They are protesting what? The fact they didn't have enough people vote for a republican? Bingo.

A cynic would consider that the definition of democracy.

9. CNBC isn't main street as such
But these guys are nothing short of Fox News. NBC, and GE should be ashamed.
Bloomberg is the PBS to CNBC's Faux Noise. They party with the CEO's and Wall Street Whores (see Maria Bartiromo), they are there for one purpose. Reporting the "financial news" is subordinate to pushing the Wall Street agenda.

While BB is showing reports on the Asian Markets and other foreign markets and the analysis of such, CNBC is doing reports about Prostitution, "American Greed", and putting single minded dinosaurs like Larry Kudlow to simply bash Obama during his time slot (which is also what he does during the afternoon hosting gig he has on the network as well). It's a joke.

10. Until Fox Business News came along, CNBC
had to compete with Bloomberg. But it's easier to compete with lowbrow Fox.

13. Funny that CNBC would go to the tea-baggers
and not to anyone on the 'left' looking for some excitement to cover and call it 'news'. We are definitely doing something wrong, yet again. Dems also seem to be reacting instead of leading the way.

I remember a few years ago when CNN first hired Glenn Beck and thousands of people wrote to them objecting to the decision. As always, Dems were instructed to 'be polite' so they didn't look like 'leftie lunatics'.

Someone asked the head of CNN why he ignored 'liberals' and his answer was 'they don't scream loud enough' or something like that.

Manufactured news is not news. These Town Hall riots are just a distraction and it looks like the media is doing its part to help Corporate America keep everyone distracted from the real issues.

15. Every week ....
In my home town, since the Iraq war began, there have been 20 or so protestors out. Same place, same time, every weekend. They were on the news once. But, now, these idiots show up and scream nonsensical crap at town hall meetings, and the press is all over it. They want "good television" at best. At the worst, they are complacent in trying to uphold the status quo that they profit so much from. That's what drives their coverage, not any loyalty for truth.

16. I know, it's sad that those people who are so sincere
are ignored. I think I believe your second option to be the truth, that they want to uphold the status quo and looking for a story by following the rightwing wackos around, is really helping to push the agenda of their corporate bosses. They are merely propaganda dispensers at this point, imo. Bush was honest enough to blow the whistle on that for us. Well, maybe stupid enough is a better way to put it.

If I were a journalist, and looking for 'good television', I would find those 20 people you mentioned far more interesting to talk to and to follow in terms of writing about the travesty that is the war in Iraq, the millions of human stories that are available, just waiting to be told and with far more potential to attract an audience (and ratings) than screaming tea-baggers. So, they choose not to which reveals their agenda imo.

20. They're all ambulance chasers
This doesn't surprise me--and I wouldn't be shocked to hear the same story about ANY news outlet, including print. They all want to find the most sensational story, whether it's some poor woman bleeding to death on the streets in Iran or an angry pensioner shouting down her congressman.

23. My buddy worked news out in Las Vegas. I would go ride with him
sometimes and we would pull up on accident scenes and he would just roll down the window and ask, "Anyone die". And if no one did, keep driving. Everything covered needed to be shocking, scandalous and dramatic. Nothing they do is for truth, informational purposes or the public good. It is just nonsense.
