Local gay couple files for license to marry

The same-sex marriage mania gripping the East and West coasts arrived in the Midwest this week, minus the nuptials.

A few gay couples in Michigan -- including one in Jackson -- approached county clerks with intentions to marry.

"We see it as an act of civil disobedience," said Lucinda Eby, who sought a marriage license Wednesday in Jackson with her partner, Linda Sue Bente. "At some point, the law will change, at least in other states, and we want to have a record to show we tried to be part of the groundswell."

Eby and Bente were united 10 years ago in a ceremony before friends and family.
