Senate majority leader blames S.F.
for setting a same-sex 'wildfire'
Frist wants 'wildfire' of marriages stopped

Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau
Thursday, March 4, 2004
San Francisco Chronicle

Washington -- San Francisco has ignited a "wildfire" of same-sex
marriages across the country that must be stopped by amending the
U.S. Constitution, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist declared
Wednesday in prelude to a Senate hearing to explore doing just that.

The hearing was packed with lesbians and gays with children as
witnesses declared that activist judges and renegade mayors are
sending traditional marriage into a tailspin, creating a "legal
domino effect'' that will force the entire nation to accept
same-sex marriages barring a last stand by changing the nation's
founding document.

"Same-sex marriage is likely to spread through all 50 states in
coming years," Frist said. "We're going to act."

Frist's warning came as lesbian and gay couples lined up to wed in
Portland, Ore., after a Multnomah County commissioner followed San
Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's decision three weeks ago to issue
marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The mayors of New Paltz and
Nyack in New York also vowed to issue licenses, despite a warning
by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer that state law prohibits
same-sex marriages.

1. "Oh God, no!!!"
> "Same-sex marriage is likely to spread through all 50 states in
> coming years," Frist said. "We're going to act."

"Oh God, no!!! What would we campaign against if this
became 'Okay'???" Frist was heard to moan, low and slow,
as John Ashcroft annointed his head with oil...

10. Like conservatives really 'honor' marriage ...
These fucking hypocrites have done more to destroy the reputation of marriage than all the gays in the world. Frist should go after Bush's brother, who is going thru a nasty divorce right now.

20. You mean like this list of moral giants?
DEFENDERS OF THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE

Ronald Reagan - divorced the mother of two of his children to marry Nancy Reagan who bore him a daughter 7 months after the
marriage.

Bob Dole - divorced the mother of his child, who had nursed him through the long recovery from his war wounds.

Newt Gingrich - divorced his wife who was dying of cancer.

Dick Armey - House Majority Leader - divorced.

Senator Phil Gramm of Texas - divorced.

Governor John Engler of Michigan - divorced.

Governor Pete Wilson of California - divorced.

George Will - divorced.

Senator Lauch Faircloth - divorced.

Rush Limbaugh - and his current wife, Marta, have six marriages and four divorces between them.

Senator Bob Barr of Georgia - not yet 50 years old, has been married three times. He had the audacity to author and push the "Defense of Marriage Act." The current joke making the rounds on Capitol Hill is
"Bob Barr - WHICH marriage are you defending?!?)

Senator Alfonse D'Amato of New York - divorced.

Senator John Warner of Virginia - once married to
Liz Taylor.

Governor George Allen of Virginia - divorced.

Representative Helen Chenoweth of Idaho - divorced.

Senator John McCain of Arizona - divorced.

Representative John Kasich of Ohio - divorced.

Representative Susan Molinari of New York (Republican National Convention Keynote Speaker) -- divorced.

The bottom line - "Don't let gays destroy marriage - that's the job of the Republicans!"

Don't you love the hypocrisy of all this?

12. Gee, people who actually want to commit to each other
Wouldn't you think we should be encouraging this instead of trying to ban it through the Constitution?

I have changed my mind on this over the past few weeks. I was in favor of "civil unions" for same-sex couples but now I feel they are entitled to the same legal rights that I have. They are entitled to have the city/town government issue them a license and join in a legal union the same as a "traditional" couple. My legal union is no different than theirs. If I then decide to have a church bless the marriage I expect to follow that church's guidelines. But the legal issue should not take gender into consideration when bestowing married status on a couple.

Religion should play NO part in the state's issuance and acknowledgement of a marriage.

My two cents. And, as a disclaimer, I've been married to the same guy for almost 30 years now.

15. Neocons are afraid they are being proved wrong yet again.
Gay couples getting married would argue against their caricature of gays as being uncaring, promiscuous libertines who deserve to be treated badly and get aids.

If the majority started seeing gay people as having the same needs and desire for commitment and social recognition as all other humans, they might {gasp} start seeing them as the individuals they are instead of the stereotyped evil the right wingers try to portray them as being. That would be one less diversion from the tremendous harm the neocon agenda is doing to our culture. One less tool taken out of their pysch-ops of crowd manipulation gimmicks.

13. see, here's the fear
more and more places, like San Francisco and Portland, will decide to do this, not based on a judges ruling, but on the decisions of elected leaders. And then we can't blame "judicial activism' any more. There was no judicial activism in San Francisco or Portland, just officials responding to the People. It's easy to get an amendment through against 'evil judicial activists' but once democracy starts taking effect, once elected officials start making decisions, they risk having the feds overrule the decisions of the people. and that is a lot harder to sell.

14. Is there a single f*cking Republican left...
who has a sense of perspective? What in the HELL ever happened to States' Rights? How DARE this bastard get up there and criticize what the people of California do for themselves??!

If I EVER hear the phrases "states' rights" or "fiscal responsibility" again from the lips of a Republican, I will explode, messily. Why doesn't they just announce a name change for the GOP to the Fascist Party and be done with it?

Sorry, rant over. Blood pressure returning to normal, I hope.

16. This is one wildfire I'd like to see spread...
coast to coast!

It's thrilling to watch these people unshackle themselves from the government-sanctioned denial of their civil rights.

I wonder what Frist would've said if Rosa Parks had refused to give up her seat to him.

18. Fires of freedom burn bright
It's exciting to see the old dead brush burn away so that life can spring up from it. In spite of the personal flaws of the men who created it, the constitution provides the fuel for this fire.

19. Let's hope they don't try to use the same logic to stop this...
that they did for the "Healthy Forests" initiative.

Problems with wildfires? Cut down all the trees!

Problems with gay marriages? ... (you can see where this is going)

Frist is a nut. Bush* is a nut. Cheney is a nut.
When do the 'adults' get to be in charge again?
