Colombians protest US presence

Colombia : Social and political organizations in Colombia called the people to gather on Tuesday to protest US military presence and defend national sovereignty.

According to the call on Monday, the decision by President Alvaro Uribe to allow the presence of US Army troops in several spots of the Colombian territory, in line with a military pact negotiated with Washington, rides roughshod over Colombia's independence and sovereignty.

Similarly, a call for debate was made by members of the Polo Democratico Alternativo Party at a plenary of the Senate of the Republic, presided over by Senator Gloria Ines Ramirez.

The wave of protest has been joined by members of the executive direction of the Unitary Workers Union (CUT), which demanded that the government respects national sovereignty by closing US bases in Colombian territory.

Basing foreign troops in Colombia is banned under the Constitution, which only allows transit on prior authorization by Congress and the State Council, the text recalled.

1. Good luck with that Colombia...
By the time the Fed is done with us, we wont have the money to
bring any troops home from anywhere.

4. You mean, like the Romans did in Britain, we just abandon the
troops and let them become one with the locals?

3. How is this different from what Reagan and Bush did?
Looks like they are some Democrats who think, like Republicans do, that Latin America should remain a source for maids, nannies, and gardeners for wealthy Americans, and cheap labour for transnational corporations.

5. Well, we haven't tortured and massacred entire villages in the Americas, YET, as far we we know.
Of course we haven't known before until long after it was all over.

Had we known at the time, some of us would have protested, then they would have had to hire, at our expense, more agents to spy on us.
