AFPROME (AFP) — An Italian paratrooper was killed and three were wounded Tuesday in an attack with explosives in western Afghanistan, the defence ministry said.
"A patrol was attacked this morning with an explosive device around 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Farah," a defence ministry spokesman told AFP. "Three men were wounded while a fourth was killed."
The device exploded when the first vehicle of the Italian convoy passed by, he said.
The death brought to 14 the number of Italian dead in Afghanistan, about half in combat.
The three wounded soldiers' lives are out of danger, an official of the army chief of staff told the all-news channel Sky TG24.
In a communique, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi paid his condolences to the victim's family while stressing "the necessity and the importance of the peace mission in Afghanistan for the stability of a strategic region."
