Portland Ore. To Begin Gay Weddings Today
Portland Ore. To Begin Gay Weddings Today

(Portland, Oregon) Portland, Oregon today is expected to become the second west coast city to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Local radio and television stations, citing unnamed sources, report that the Multnomah County clerk will begin issuing the licenses this morning. The move, follows a legal opinion from the county attorney that same-sex marriages should be allowed.

Oregon law defines marriage only as a civil contract entered into in person by males at least 17 years of age and females at least 17 years of age, who are otherwise capable.

That generally has been interpreted as meaning 1 man and 1 woman, but the county lawyer says a court is likely to find it is insufficiently clear to prevent same-sex marriage.

3. Yes! I love my city!
Makes me feel good to be from a city where this can happen. There will be lots of controversy, but it will be fantastic!

8. And even though Lars and others like him are on every AM channel.
Portland still manages to hold on to some sense of common sense and sanity.

7. Did a dam burst?
Is something rolling down a mountain faster than anyone can get out of its way?

Talk about an idea whose time has come!

And don't mind if I start tearing up for a friend who didn't live to see it. But I can see him grinning. And possibly whooping.

12. Like trying to stop a damn bursting...
... remember the old story about a boy sticking his finger in the damn (actually another word was used in this context but totally inappropriate for the story!) to stemn the flow...

:-)

10. Barney Frank called it wrong
if a dozen or so states start issuing licenses this genie will not be put back into the bottle. America will have to admit the world did not implode.

This hetero-been-married-for-30-years-mom couldn't be happier!

13. I miss Portland!
I grew up there (my career has taken me to Indiana). I hope certain dear friends in Portland will take advantage of this.

Please continue discussion within the original LBN Thread on this topic, posted Tuesday evening by missb:

Multnomah County to begin issuing gay marriage licenses

It would be very helpful if you could add any links or new news coverage to the original thread.

Thanks!
