McSupersizes to be phased out

Tuesday, March 2, 2004 Posted: 8:03 PM EST (0103 GMT)

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Say goodbye to those super-sized fries -- McDonald's is slimming down its menu.

The hamburger giant has started phasing out its trademark Supersize fries and drinks in its U.S. restaurants as part of an effort to simplify its menu and give customers choices that support a balanced lifestyle, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

By the end of 2004, super size will no longer be available at the nation's 13,000-plus McDonald's outlets except in certain promotions, McDonald's spokesman Walt Riker said.

The move comes as the world's largest restaurant company, and fast-food chains in general, are under growing public pressure to give consumers healthier food options in a nation that has suddenly become aware of its bulging waistline and the health dangers that come with it.

2. That's a shame.
I don't think their menu is particularly complicated as it currently stands.

7. Now if McD's wanted to make a REAL statement....
...they could test and certify that their beef is 100% BSE-free. THAT would rock! But that will probably only be in my dreams.

is 100% beef - as they used to, a long, long time ago!

9. we are a family of four
and would supersize one meal, order a salad and three cheeseburgers and we were always comfortably full when all was said and done. And my kids are teenagers too. I'm sort of sad to see this deal go.

10. No biggie.
For what it costs at Micky Dee's and how pathetic the food is... I'll just keep going to my local greasy spoon. The hamburgers are actually bigger than the buns there :)

11. This is just a price increase in disguise...
If you want the same amount of fries you will have to buy two orders of medium fries and pay a healthy premium over the old price of the biggy fries.

Too bad, cause they do make yummy fries.

20. They must have discovered that they are losing a penny or
two on the supersize thing... they could give a rat's ass about simplifying menus or what people eat, or how fat they are...

It has to be about money.

21. I would have to agree with you there Scooter
In So Cal Atkins, is all the craze. Carl's, Burger King, In and Out all have low carb burgers. They would be smart to have unbreaded zucchini fries.

22. again, read the book Fat Land
the whole "supersize" thing was a marketing ploy to generate revenue.the idea was to get "more for less" and get more people to come back for more. and more again

They used the supersize thing has a hook to fatten a whole generation of profits.

What they are doing now is another ploy. Message: we know you're fat, but see, we care. And please dont stop eating our food.

26. Is this a tacit admission of culpability for surging American obesity?
Nah! Silly me. For a second there, I mistook a venal and self-serving marketing ploy for community responsibility.
