SF Mayor Under Police Guard After Death Threats

(San Francisco, California) San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is under 24 hour police protection following a number of death threats in recent days.

The protection includes both uniformed and plainclothes officers.

Television station KPIX reports that up to three bodyguards now surround Newsom at any one time.

The threats began shortly after the mayor ordered the city clerk to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on February 12th, but have significantly increased over the past week, after President George W. Bush announced his support for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

Police officials call the threats "credible".

On Saturday Newsom accused Bush of political showmanship and discrimination after the Social Security Administration has instructed its offices nationwide not to accept any marriage certificates from San Francisco as proof of identification. The directive affects licenses issued to straight and gay couples alike.

Considering all that has happened in CA these last few years,people are pretty sick of the "righteous" bullies. He drew a line saying don't cross this because, I'm not moving.

San Fransisco has a huge gay population. Many important citizens who just want to live their lives.
