Soros Says Worst Of Global Crisis Is "Behind Us."
Source: NYT/Reuters

The worst of the global economic crisis is over, multi-billionaire financier George Soros told Polish news channel TVN24 on Sunday urging the creation of international regulations to oversee global markets.

"Decidedly the worst (of the crisis) is already behind us," said Soros, a 78-year-old Hungarian-born American with Jewish roots.

1. Wishful thinking?
He needs to realize that unless there is some real help at the bottom, the fortunes of the top will continue to be stagnant.

Maybe he's OK with this. I'm not.

2. Whew! I feel better now!
I know Soros is a smart guy, but I really can't take much comfort in his words. The worst may be over for the banks , corporations, conglomerates etc, but the effects will be fetl for a long time by the average person.

3. Translation: he's trying to get suckers into the market so he can sacrifice them to his hedge fund.
Always be aware that anything Soros says is liable to be for market manipulation purposes.

5. It's called front-running on Wall Street.
Urging others to buy his story so he can cash in on what he owns.

The same was true when he predicted a long term disaster for the world economies in April. Front running is his style.

We know conservatives are usually bald-faced liars.

16. He is NOT an enemy.
He supports more progressive causes than most, WITH REAL CASH. A lot of foolishness and ignorance going on from 'progressives,' imo.

'founder and chairman of a network of foundations that promote, among other things, the creation of open, democratic societies based upon the rule of law, market economies, transparent and accountable governance, freedom of the press, and respect for human rights.'

26. The RW hates him - and as you can see from
this thread, their pack of lies and disinformation has spread successfully. Soros does a lot behind the scenes but his open support of Kerry in 2004 and his vow to bring down the Bush Administration certainly has made him a target. I personally am impressed by this man and his work with the Open Society orgs he has founded. Very impressed. Would that we had more like him.

35. I have a short list of businessmen I respect...
Edited on Mon Jun-22-09 02:55 PM by AnneD
George Soros, Warren Buffett, Jim Rogers, and the CEO of Costco. On the whole they are decent businessman and have as my grand pa was fond of saying "moral fiber". Nothing wrong with making money, but it's more important how you use the money you've earned. Noblesse oblige is not a quaint old idea.

I always suspect there is envy and jealousy when it comes to Soros and anti semitism is not too far behind. I don't presume to judge, I just look at the fruit.

9. Why did Reuters feel the need to inform us, in paragraph 2...

... that Soros has "Jewish roots"???

This is a rhetorical question, I suppose. It just really jumped out at me, as a former reporter and editor. And someone who is easily "poutraged" over perceived hints of bigotry, or so I've been told. :eyes:

Not sure what it means either. Could be Reuters has fired all the people who could write and edit leaving all the interns to fend for themselves.

11. I know some on this thread truly dislike Soros... however
from what I have read of his biography, he IS aware of what the average person is going thru and has done much to further democracy thru his programs than seems to be known or appreciated here. Krugman said much the same thing a week or so ago.

I think Soros is pretty savvy. I also think he has made enough money for himself or else he wouldn't be so keen to give so much of it away. He gave away millions to help Kerry in 2004 and made himself quite a few enemies in the GOP.

If I were a cynical person, I would perhaps think the 'jewish roots' comment had something to do with tapping into the hyped anti-semitic fear of jews and money control. Especially as the man is not a practicing or Orthodox Jew. Hmmmmm.

I wouldn't trust him any farther than I can throw a Brinks truck. He didn't become a billionaire by being straight-arrow and virtuous.

23. I agree but
he has done more for bringing democracy to the commununist block countries than any other person. It wasn't Raygun who brought down that wall - which we all knew of course. Soros had a lot to do with it. I especially like the incident where he donated copiers to his former country of Hungary thru his Open Society org and they were then able to self-publish literature that was forbidden by the then communist leaders. Information was key for the resistance to organize and spread the word.

Yes, he made his money by breaking the bank of England - but he has given millions and maybe billions away to improve the lots of the average Joe. One of my favorite biographies: Soros - the Life and Times of a Messianic Billionaire.
