2. Which puts the REAL unemployment rate closer to 18-20%.
Remember, though, "We're turning the corner"...

5. Not from what I've been reading...
"The Labor Department reported Friday that 48 states and the District of Columbia saw employment conditions deteriorate last month."

11. It's not Strickland's Fault
Ohio was a distaster before he took over and what is supposed to do during the great recession here in Ohio? Plants shutting down left and right...DHL..., etc.

Plus with the right-wing Senate forget anything passing.

13. I do realize that it's not all Strickland's fault...
I just wish that they ran someone else, instead of him. I haven't seen him negotiating with any companies/factories, etc. that announce that they're moving to China. That is his job.

What really bothered me about him.....I was regularly doing phone-banking for him when he was running. I was given a note card of what I HAD to say when I spoke with someone. I ALWAYS had to mention that he was a pastor at a Methodist Church. Who cares??

12. Did you hear about NCR pulling out of Dayton?
Edited on Fri Jun-19-09 07:21 PM by AngryOldDem
Going to an Atlanta suburb, because Georgia had a more attractive business package than Ohio. Came as a COMPLETE surprise to both local and state officials. Lee Fisher stood on the Old Courthouse steps whining that the corporation wasn't playing fair. It was embarrassing. (But at least Lee showed up; Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin was out of town.)

Discussion over at the Ohio forum, which, shamelessly, I admit I am too lazy to C&P at the moment.

14. No, I had not heard that....
Cleveland, Akron/Canton and Dayton are really getting decimated with job loss.

I'll check the Ohio forum out.

15. Handwriting had been on the wall for years.
And it seems I am the only one who has the nerve to lay the blame where it belongs.

Dayton's (lack of) intelligent leadership has played a big role in its demise, unfortunately. And even now almost everyone -- from the media to the man on the street -- keeps bringing up its great industrial past as if that should have kept the region immune from changing times and demographics over the past 50 years or so. They also blame NCR's CEO for being a heartless, greedy bastard -- in short, being a bottom-line businessman. That he is, granted, but that does little to dig Dayton out of its hole. What I'm **not** hearing is any substantive discussion of how to move forward. Very sad. And typical.

There was no way Ohio could have matched what Georgia was offering. Georgia just would have kept upping the ante. Ohio just chose to fold early.

16. Agreed.....
Sad thing is....Ohio is chosing to fold early far too often and it's killing us.

17. I've been out of work almost a year now
I have not even been able to get an interview since Feb. The contracting companies I use (I'll take contract or contract to hire) tell me straight up when they put in my resume at places that I'm one of 50 (or more) that they are submitting. The last interview I had with Grange, back in Feb, they told me that I was one of thirty people they were interviewing and they had picked us from over 100 resumes. Freakin blows, I really want to have a job again.
