Former Catholic priest in photo scandal marries (Father Alberto Cutie)
Source: CNN

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) — Father Alberto Cutie, an internationally known Catholic priest who admitted having a romantic affair and breaking his vow of celibacy, was married this week in Miami, Florida.

Cutie, 40, announced last month that he was leaving the Catholic Church and joining the Episcopal Church.

A judge performed the marriage ceremony Tuesday in Coral Gables, Florida, for him and Ruhama B. Canellis, 35, according to the marriage license issued by Miami-Dade County.

1. I am so happy for him
I am always happy when a Priest comes to his senses and decides to live in the human world and be a full person instead of a decrepit, pale, angry-looking gargoyle. So wonderful! I hope he has many years of happiness with his love.

3. what a wonderful love story!
They should write a book about their love story and the journey to this decision. You know this had to be a difficult decision for both of them with all the ramifications.

6. Actually, his name is really Cutié...
...but the other way is a whole lot funnier.

Did his parish replace him with Father Carlos Studmuffin?

9. Just like pronouncing Sotomayor ...
the way she would pronounce it herself, "Cutié" is so unnatural for regular American.

11. I find it strange when an accent is thrown onto a Hispanic surname
I remember in San Antonio the newscaster would be rattling on in the Standard American that they learn in speech and journalism class, and then they get to a name like Cisneros or Chavez and all of a sudden it's not just the pronuciation but they throw in an accent--and it's just on the surname, not the given name. Then they are back to their Standard American.

19. IMO, the only correct way to pronounce a name is the way the person named pronounces it.

20. Yes, but they called him Fr. Cutie because he's so handsome. It's a bit of word play.

7. This is pretty common, but most priests who marry aren't
Edited on Wed Jun-17-09 10:32 AM by LibDemAlways
public figures. The man who performed Hugh Hefner's wedding ceremony back in 89 was a Catholic priest who had married and become a marriage counselor. He was the parish priest who stopped by to visit my parents when they moved to CA back in '61. Another from a local parish now performs non-denominational weddings. There are quite a few "rent-a-priests," Catholic priests who married and farm themselves out to perform weddings/funerals etc. It's a shame they are forced out because they would have a lot to offer. Married clergy of some Protestant faiths can convert to Catholicism, stay married, and become priests. There's an exception to every rule.

14. The RC Church says
a married Priest would be too busy with family issues to be an effective Priest.

Yet in the Byzante Rite Catholic Church, (The Catholic Church has several Rites, Roman,Byzantine,Maronite,Coptic, etc), a Priest can be married provided he gets married before being ordained. Havent heard of any job-performance issues....

15. I think it has more to do with the fact that the Roman Church doesn't want to support families
what if every priest could be married? If they follow church doctrine they would have a fair number of kids. Now think about the cost of having to raise those kids and support them and a wife and you have the reason the church isn't so fond of having priests marry.

Less to do with being devoted to your vocation and more to do with cost savings.

17. The reason is more base than that.
From medieval times, the true rationale behind a celebate priesthood was to prevent any claims to land and property that would probably ensue if a priest were married. When the priest died, any private property would revert to the Church.

Property and land grab, plain and simple -- not much about the Church is as romantic and faith based as what they want you to believe.

25. Another down-to-earth reason, VERY down-to-earth
When this story broke, this busy, no-nonsense dude, member of an ethnic group that is nearly ALL R.C., took a pause to stare at the t.v. to take it all in.

He heard it, took a look at the priest, then mumbled as he went back to his busyness, "No WAY we're going leave our women with THAT son-of-a-gun."

Iow, one of the purposes of the celibacy deal was to babysit the women, keep them busy with "high minded" and "important" things, while the menfolk are out there taking care of business or hanging at the watering holes or whatever else away from home.

Ioow, the supposedly celibate priests were taking the role of the eunuchs in the harems.

23. The Univision gossip shows say a bigger story about him is going to break in 10 days
Edited on Thu Jun-18-09 01:38 PM by UTUSN
And I'm not specifying "working days" or calendar days.

El Gordo y la Flaca, the former paparazzo (him) and Gloria ESTEFAN's niece-in-law (her; frequent hobnobbers of Poppy and the rest) have said from the beginning that this supposed "love story" is a cover for something else, hints of other affairs, possibly Gay.

I hate to burst the bubble of the posters here who find this to be a love story. This dude is an arrogant, misogynist narcissist. In the firs interview he gave, the woman reporter asked about the girlfriend's personality, was she "patient, or what traits?" He replied, "Have you ever known a woman who is patient?"

He bragged (sic) repeatedly that he is a REAL MAN, that "under the priest's soutane there are TROUSERS!1" He bragged (sic) that the reporter "knows what circles I move in" (celebrities) and that he had had MANY MANY "offers" over the years.

That said, this whole thing is NOT about the church's antiquated (or not) rules and celibacy. All he had to do was go to his authorities and resign, say he no longer could or wanted to be celibate, that he wanted to marry and have a family. Instead, he lied (in this known incident) for two years while occupying a FALSE facade.
